Overview

We are seeking team members who are motivated to improve the quality of news content that local residents receive. As a journalist, you would be equipped with tools and technologies you can use to research issues and curate the right content. Our journalism will be purely focused on local issues rather than national issues.

About Us:

Open Governance Initiative (OpGov.News) is an initiative where we connect community members with what is happening in their local government. To achieve this, we take information about the local meetings and publish it locally for anyone to review.

The project is led by Lead For Earth, an IRS-certified 501c3 nonprofit with the intent of creating local leadership within the community.

Duties

• Collect information and update it on OpGov.News portal about the meeting and connect with members of the community who speak in the meetings.
• Connect with the representative and share community voices on regular basis.
• Write articles and submit for editing, then share on local social media platforms to increase visibility within your community.
• Conduct thorough research before writing any article, especially for matters involving residents of a community.
• Write clear, concise, and compelling articles that adhere to journalistic standards.
• Engage in fact-checking to maintain the integrity of the information presented.
• Utilize photography and videography skills to enhance storytelling through visual media.
• Maintain a strong understanding of current events and trends within the industry.

Requirements

• Strong editing skills with attention to detail for proofreading and copy editing.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Ability to conduct thorough research and present findings effectively.
• Availability to attend a city council meeting or planning commission meeting at least once per month.
• Education or background in journalism is a plus.
