About Communities First Initiative

Communities First Initiative (CFI) is a statewide 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of low- and moderate-income seniors, families, students, and young adults throughout New Jersey. Our programs focus on financial stability, healthy lifestyles, food security, workforce development, and community engagement through partnerships with affordable housing communities and local organizations.

Position Overview

CFI is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic undergraduate or graduate student to join our team as a Nonprofit Program & Community Engagement Intern. This internship offers hands-on experience in nonprofit operations, community outreach, event planning, communications, and grant development while making a meaningful impact in local communities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with community event planning, preparation, and on-site coordination
  • Create flyers, signage, and participant materials
  • Support outreach through email, social media, and community communications
  • Research grant opportunities and prospective funding sources
  • Assist with grant writing, reports, and letters of inquiry
  • Maintain volunteer and event databases
  • Perform general administrative tasks to support daily operations

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate or graduate student majoring in:
    • Communications
    • English
    • Social Work
    • Public Administration
    • Government
    • Nonprofit Management
    • Marketing
    • Or a related field
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Reliable transportation and willingness to travel to community event locations in New Jersey
