Instructional Design Intern (Public Health)

Organization Description:  CSTE is an organization of member states and territories representing public health epidemiologist. We also act as the professional home for individuals working in applied public health epidemiologists. CSTE works to advance public health policy and epidemiologic capacity. We provide information, education, and developmental support of practicing epidemiologists in a wide range of areas as well as expertise for program and surveillance efforts. For over six decades CSTE has worked with states to provide technical advice and assistance to partner health agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CSTE offers a hybrid workplace model with the National Office location in Atlanta, GA with a majority of staff located in that area. Most Atlanta based staff telework partly in the National Office and partly from an alternative worksite, such as their home. CSTE also supports a distributed remote workforce across the country. Position Description:  Under the general supervision of the Director of Educational Strategy, the intern will be responsible for supporting the development of training that strengthens the national public health workforce. Under the supervision of the Director of Educational Strategy, the Instructional Design Intern will support a variety of CSTE’s workforce development, instructional design, and education activities aimed at advancing epidemiologic capacity and public health practice.

The intern will apply adult learning principles, health education concepts, and competency-based frameworks to help design effective, learner-centered training. Work produced may directly support public health professionals and initiatives, with opportunities to contribute to tangible deliverables such as e-learning modules, training materials, and evaluation summaries suitable for a professional portfolio.

Core areas of work include curriculum development and implementation, training assessment, learning management system (LMS) administration, support for continuing education processes, and program evaluation. The intern will gain hands-on exposure to LMS platforms and training operations, building highly marketable skills in learning and development. Content areas may include workforce development, infectious diseases, surveillance and informatics, and non-infectious diseases.

Day-to-day activities include a combination of collaborative and independent work, such as participating in Zoom meetings and webinars, supporting virtual training logistics, communicating with CSTE members and staff, conducting literature reviews, assisting with analysis of training effectiveness, and contributing to report writing and project coordination. The intern will also have opportunities to take ownership of discrete project components and contribute ideas to improve learning experiences.

This internship provides valuable exposure to national public health initiatives and workforce development efforts while building practical skills in instructional design, training evaluation, and program implementation. Interns will receive mentorship from experienced professionals in a supportive, collaborative environment. This role is well-suited for students pursuing careers in instructional design, public health, health education, or workforce development.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in the design and development of online training and learning materials
  • Apply adult learning and health education principles to support curriculum development
  • Support implementation of training programs and educational initiatives
  • Contribute to analyzing training effectiveness and identifying opportunities for improvement
  • Provide support for LMS administration (e.g., uploading materials, tracking participation)
  • Assist with continuing education documentation and processes
  • Conduct literature reviews to inform evidence-based training content
  • Participate in meetings, webinars, and conference calls via Zoom, including note-taking
  • Communicate professionally with CSTE members, partners, and staff
  • Support report writing and documentation of program activities
  • Assist with meeting planning, logistics, and coordination of training initiatives
  • Perform other duties as assigned

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Must be a current undergraduate or graduate student
  • Preferred majors: Public Health, Health Education, Instructional Design, Epidemiology, or related field
  • Experience with Articulate or Elucidat is preferred but not required; willingness to learn is essential
  • Familiarity with public health concepts or activities is preferred
  • Experience with virtual learning, training development, or related academic projects is a plus

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Must be a current student throughout the duration of the internship
  • No travel required
  • Must reside in Georgia

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Basic understanding of public health principles
  • Exposure to health education concepts preferred
  • Awareness of adult learning principles is helpful

SKILLSET: 

  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Strong organizational and project coordination skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Analytical skills to support training evaluation and data interpretation
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Zoom

 

CSTE’s pay structure is establish by grade with each position placed in a grade based on the level of difficulty, duties and responsibilities, knowledge and skill requirements, education and training, and qualifications. A new employee is usually hired at the minimum of the grade but commensurate with related job experience. See posting details for the grade hourly range. 

Hourly grade range: $15.00

 

Eligibility for telework or remote work:

  • Position based in Atlanta, GA and eligible for hybrid telework
