Literacy Tutoring Intern

Position Summary

Succeed2gether (S2G) is seeking a college student to serve as an intern supporting our after-school tutoring program, with a particular focus on literacy development, program monitoring, documentation, and qualitative data collection.

The College Literacy Tutoring Intern will primarily observe and document tutoring sessions, maintain organized student records, assist with qualitative data collection  (observations, interviews, etc.) and analysis, and help S2G staff monitor student engagement and progress. The intern will work closely with S2G staff and tutors to ensure that information from tutoring sessions is accurately captured and organized to help inform program improvements and evaluate the effectiveness of S2G's literacy-focused programming.

Tutoring students will be a secondary responsibility of the position. When appropriate, the intern will provide one-on-one tutoring support to students participating in the after-school program.

This internship is an excellent opportunity for a college student interested in education, literacy, nonprofit program management, research, data collection, social services, psychology, or a related field to gain hands-on experience supporting an educational program.

Primary Responsibilities

Program Monitoring and Observation

  • Observe tutoring sessions and document student engagement, participation, areas of difficulty, and other relevant observations.
  • Complete clear, objective observation notes following tutoring sessions.
  • Identify patterns or recurring themes in student engagement, literacy development, and tutoring needs.
  • Communicate relevant observations and questions to S2G staff.
  • Help staff monitor the implementation and effectiveness of the literacy tutoring program.
  • Maintain professionalism and protect student confidentiality when observing sessions and handling student information.

Data Collection and Qualitative Analysis

  • Assist S2G staff with collecting qualitative information related to student progress and engagement.
  • Review tutoring session notes, observation notes, and other program documentation.
  • Help organize information into categories or themes to understand student experiences and program outcomes.
  • Assist with identifying trends in student progress, participation, and literacy development.
  • Help prepare organized summaries of qualitative observations for review by S2G staff.
  • Support the collection and organization of information that may be used for program evaluation, grant reporting, and future program planning.

Student Records and File Organization

  • Assist with organizing and maintaining student files and tutoring records.
  • Ensure that session documentation and observation notes are properly organized and associated with the appropriate student.
  • Help maintain accurate and up-to-date program records.
  • Assist staff in locating and compiling information needed for program evaluation and reporting.
  • Handle student information with appropriate confidentiality and care.

Secondary Responsibility: Tutoring

  • Provide one-on-one tutoring support when needed.
  • Encourage students to develop confidence, independence, and positive attitudes toward learning.
  • Adapt tutoring approaches to individual students' needs and learning styles.
  • Maintain brief notes regarding tutoring sessions as requested by S2G staff.

Minimum Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university, preferably a sophomore or junior.
  • Strong written communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to write clear, objective, and detailed observation notes.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain organized records.
  • Ability to handle confidential student information appropriately.
  • Comfortable working with children and adolescents in an educational setting.
  • Reliable and able to commit to two afternoons per week from approximately 3:00–6:00 p.m.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating with S2G staff and tutors.
  • Dependable, punctual, professional, and willing to learn.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Interest or coursework in education, literacy, psychology, sociology, social work, research, data analysis, child development, or a related field.
  • Previous experience tutoring, mentoring, teaching, coaching, conducting observations, or working with children and adolescents.
  • Experience with qualitative research, data collection, interviews, observations, or coding of qualitative information.
  • Strong writing, documentation, and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, spreadsheets, or similar organizational tools.
  • Ability to recognize patterns in written information.
  • Interest in nonprofit organizations, educational equity, youth development, or community-based programs.

Internship Schedule

The internship will run from October 1, 2026 through February 2027. The intern will work two days per week, selecting two regular afternoons from Monday through Thursday, generally from 3:00–6:00 p.m.

The majority of the intern's time will be dedicated to session observation, documentation, student file organization, and qualitative data collection and analysis. Tutoring will be a secondary component of the position.
