Bilingual Education Tutor

Bilingual Education Tutor at The Newark Public Library 

Location: Newark Public Library – Main Branch 

      5 Washington Street, Newark, NJ 07102 

Position Type: Part-Time Paid Internship 

Compensation: $20.00 per hour 

Schedule: Approximately 8–13 hours per week (2.5-hour shifts) 

Program Duration: Semester-based (Fall and Spring) 

Funding: This position is made possible through the support of the Devils Youth Foundation. 

 

About the Program  

The Devil's Assist Program is a bilingual after-school tutoring initiative offered through the Library's New Jersey Hispanic Research & Information Center (NJHRIC). The program provides academic support, literacy development, and homework assistance to Newark students, with a particular focus on multilingual learners and children from immigrant families. By combining individualized tutoring with family engagement and access to Library resources, the program helps students develop the skills and confidence needed for long-term academic success. 

 

Position Overview  

The Newark Public Library seeks enthusiastic, dependable, and community-minded college students to serve as Bilingual Education Tutors for the Devil's Assist Program. 

 

Key Responsibilities  

Academic Support & Tutoring  

● Provide one-on-one and small group tutoring for students in grades Pre-K through 8  

● Assist students with homework assignments across subjects including reading, writing, mathematics, and general academic support  

● Support multilingual learners who are developing English language skills  

● Help younger students build foundational literacy and reading comprehension skills  

 

Student Engagement  

● Foster a welcoming, encouraging, and supportive learning environment  

● Build meaningful relationships with students through mentorship and positive reinforcement  

● Encourage confidence, curiosity, and independent problem-solving skills  

● Use sports-themed educational materials and activities to create engaging learning experiences  

 

Family & Community Engagement  

● Communicate respectfully with parents and guardians regarding student support when appropriate  

● Provide bilingual communication support for Spanish-speaking families  

● Help families feel comfortable accessing educational resources and community opportunities  

● Serve as a positive representative of the library and community partners. 

 

Program Support  

● Record student attendance and participation  

● Assist with tracking student progress and program outcomes  

● Help distribute educational materials and learning resources  

● Support occasional family literacy events and community programs hosted by the Library. 

 

Minimum Qualifications  

Required  

● Fluency in both Spanish and English (speaking, reading, and writing). 

● Strong communication and interpersonal skills  

● Interest in education, mentorship, literacy and community service  

● Ability to work effectively with children and families from diverse backgrounds  

● Professional, responsible, and dependable  

● Commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all students  

 

Preferred  

● Currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student  

● Majoring in Education, Childhood Studies, Social Work, Sociology, Communications, or related field  

● Previous experience in tutoring, mentoring, teaching assistant, camp counselor, or working with children  

● Familiarity with Newark communities and cultural awareness of the local population

Tutors may also have opportunities to participate in professional networking events and community initiatives supported through the Library's partnership with the Devils Youth Foundation.
