PROGRAMS INTERN

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The Kitchen House is a nonprofit organization offering hands-on educational experiences that help our neighbors put plant-forward eating into practice. Our mission is to create opportunities for the Central Florida community to explore deeper connections with our food and each other through immersive garden-to-kitchen experiences. Our vision is a community that prioritizes sustainable, whole food as a source of joy and connection. Our facility in College Park comprises a teaching kitchen and culinary garden, nestled into a residential neighborhood in one of Orlando’s most vibrant communities. 


 

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

The Programs Intern supports the planning, preparation, and implementation of educational programs at The Kitchen House. This position is ideal for students or emerging professionals interested in education, nutrition, culinary arts, nonprofit management, agriculture, or community engagement. The intern will gain hands-on experience working with youth and adult learners while helping deliver high-quality culinary and garden-based programming.


 

Flexible schedule based on program needs and academic requirements, 10–20 hours per week. Availability during some evenings and weekends may be required for special events and programs.


 

LEARNING OUTCOMES AND BENEFITS

  • Gain experience planning and implementing educational programs from concept through delivery, including setting goals, structuring sessions, and evaluating outcomes.
  • Develop curriculum for youth and adult audiences, tailoring lessons and activities to different age groups and learning styles.
  • Gain hands-on experience teaching culinary and garden-based lessons to both youth and adult participants.
  • Build knowledge of nonprofit operations, including how programs are staffed, budgeted, and coordinated behind the scenes.
  • Gain experience conducting community outreach to build participation and strengthen relationships with local partners.
  • Gain an understanding of event coordination and management from planning through execution, including logistics, scheduling, and on-site facilitation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Support

  • Assist with the setup, facilitation, and cleanup of educational programs, camps, workshops, and special events.
  • Support instructors during cooking, gardening, and nutrition education activities.
  • Help prepare lesson materials, handouts, and activity supplies.
  • Assist with participant check-in and welcome activities.
  • Help maintain a positive, safe, and engaging learning environment.

Curriculum and Content Development 

  • Research and develop educational content related to cooking, gardening, nutrition, sustainability, and food systems.
  • Assist with creating lesson plans, worksheets, presentations, and educational resources.
  • Help organize and update curriculum materials and program files.

Garden and Kitchen Support

  • Assist with harvesting produce for classes and programs.
  • Support kitchen preparation, organization, inventory, and ingredient preparation.
  • Follow all food safety and sanitation procedures.

Administrative Support

  • Assist with data entry, attendance tracking, and program evaluations, outcomes, and impact metrics.
  • Help organize program supplies and educational materials.
  • Support registration, participant communications, and event preparation.

Community Engagement and Events

  • Support community tabling events and fundraising activities.
  • Assist with photography, social media content collection, and storytelling efforts when appropriate.
  • Serve as a positive ambassador for The Kitchen House.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Current college student, recent graduate, or individual seeking experience in education, nutrition, culinary arts, agriculture, public health, nonprofit management, or a related field.
  • Interest in food education, gardening, nutrition, and community engagement.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Comfortable working with children and diverse populations.
  • Reliable transportation and personal laptop is required.
  • Experience working with youth.
  • Experience in gardening, culinary arts, nutrition, or environmental education.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and Canva.
  • Food Handler Certification (or willingness to obtain).

PHYSICAL / MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The position requires sitting and standing for extended periods of time, using keyboards and phones. The ability to see and hear, lift up to 25 pounds occasionally, and work in indoor and outdoor environments is required. Use of keyboards and phones is required daily.
