Organizational Overview

Finding Common Purpose (FCP) is a pooled fund building an Outcomes Movement to ensure that working Americans can thrive—have access to affordable housing and childcare, attain a solid education, and earn wages that reflect the true cost of living. We make philanthropic investments to empower communities through publicly accessible and actionable outcomes data that tracks progress towards collectively held north-star goals and outcomes. It was founded by entrepreneur Andrew Wolk, its lead donor, in order to maximize impact and help improve the quality of life for many others across the U.S.,  FCP’s goal is to build a collaborative of funders, pooling resources, to maximize impact. 

 

FCP is seeking a creative, strategic, and organized Marketing and Communications Intern (15–20 hours/week). This role will support our internal communications efforts including developing engaging content on a weekly basis, supporting the knowledge management function of the organization, and supporting implementation of our strategic communications plan.  This role will also work with an external communications agency to strengthen our national brand presence and drive an outcomes movement. Finally it will provide support as needed to the development team and grant-making team. 

 

The ideal candidate is a strong and creative storyteller with exceptional writing and design skills, a collaborative mindset, demonstrated interest in the social sector and experience aligning communications with organizational goals. 

 

Responsibilities 

  • Standard Communications Support: In partnership with other FCP comms contractors, this role will:  
    • Lead development of regular communications content including LinkedIn posts, Substack and email newsletters, grantee spotlights etc. This includes identifying national, economic, technology or social sector news that are relevant to FCP’s mission & goals 
    • Utilize FCP’s internal learnings and work to promote FCP as a national outcomes leader in the field. Help draft and finalize website content to support our ongoing website maintenance 
    • Collaboration with internal teams and leadership is expected to ensure messaging consistency and alignment with FCP’s strategy and goals. 
  • Grant-making support: This role will support the codifying and sharing of grantee learnings across different mediums including writing, video and podcast etc. This will include: 
    • Partnering with program officers to identify and develop knowledge management opportunities from active grants 
    • Translating field & grantee learnings & interviews into blog posts, case studies or practice briefs 
  • Operational and Strategic Execution: 
    • Implementing key aspects of the strategic communications plan. This will include managing a communications calendar, supporting media pitches, collaborating with other teams on FCP convenings, supporting conference proposals and placements etc. 
    • Track engagement metrics and identify opportunities for internal communication improvement/effectiveness
    • Provide insight and feedback on brand storytelling and positioning initiatives.
  • Project management and collaboration
    • Set the internal agendas for weekly syncs. Manage project timelines and workplans in Asana and ensure internal alignment on responsibilities and adherence to deadlines.  
    • Support as needed 1.) our external communications consultant, Instrumental Communications,  and agency, GMMB,.as well as  our grant-making and fundraising teams to develop field resources aligned to building an outcomes movement

 

Qualifications and skills 

  • Background and experience in communications & marketing and the social sector 
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
  • Strong project management and organizational abilities.
  • Strong visual/design skills. 
  • Demonstrated interest in Finding Common Purpose’s mission and values, with a deep belief in building collaboration, understanding, and shared purpose across diverse audiences.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Policy/Political Science,  Economics or related disciplines. Current students may apply. 
  • Prior communications experience including (but not limited to) undergraduate on campus/internship experiences. This can include writing for volunteer positions, student club/paper, personal project, or via social media
  • Comfortable working in Wordpress and Figma

Time & pay

  • This is a part time role, averaging 15-20 hours/week at $25/hour
  • This is largely a remote position, however the ability to work east coast hours is preferred. 
  • The internship will begin on September 1st and last for six months, ending around March 30, 2027.
