Description
In this role, a student currently enrolled in college, will work with the Puget Sound Estuarium, a growing non-profit, to inspire conservation of our ecosystems in the Olympia community.
Undergraduate interns must be concurrently enrolled in a college course for the program, and all interns will report regularly to Estuarium staff.
Class credit Internship. Please reach out to discuss further how class credit could work. Current undergraduate students can earn up to 8 college credits/quarter and masters students can earn up to 6 credits/quarter.*
This internship is hosted by the Estuarium. We are open to reimbursement programs as well.
*Possibility of paid internship if through a reimbursement program.
Responsibilities
Estuarium Advertising and Promotion
- Work directly with the Design and Communications Manager and Community Engagement/Programs Director for programs advertising based on our branding guides
- Provide assistance posting content and programs on social media, community calendars, and physical flyers around town, connect with local businesses about programs, events, and potential partnerships
- Research new opportunities for effective, low cost advertising, areas, demographics in our community
- Assist to keep track of program sales, working with staff to adjust advertising as needed
- Photograph programs, keep files organized and easily accessible for marketing and reports
- Promote the Estuarium’s gift shop items, help track inventory, and sales, potentially research new eco-friendly products for future acquisition
- Collaborating on poster and advertising materials with Design and Communications Manager
- Fundraising, event planning, and promotion
- Work with volunteers of all ages and backgrounds
- Other duties as assigned
Community Outreach Lead
- Work with staff and volunteers to promote the Estuarium’s programs at community events in person
- Present marine science activities to the general public at events, usually with volunteers
- Facilitate volunteers as a lead at outreach events
- Support program/outreach planning, documentation, and assessment through feedback
- Transport, set up, and tear down outreach equipment weighing up to 30lbs
- Work outdoors, typically with a canopy for rain for direct sun
- Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
Required
- Current enrollment in a College program, ideally in marketing, design, media, art, marine science, or general administration and management
- Clean background check
- Available to work flexible schedules, which could include weekends 10am - 6pm
Preferred
- Ability to learn environmental science concepts and communicate them in plain language, or translate them for a variety of audiences
- Comfortable working with young children and people of all ages
- Strong public speaking skills; comfortable speaking to diverse groups of people, people from any background
- Computer proficiency with knowledge of Google Suite, Meta Suite, Adobe Creative Cloud and/or Express, and ability to learn new programs
- Ability to lift up to 40lbs
- Valid Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle
