Technical Editor (Job ID 126948).

Vacancy announcement closes on 12 June

POSITION SUMMARY
As a Technical Editor at the GG-12–13 level, you will plan and manage writing products, evaluating whether content is suitable for its audience, logically organized, research-based, complete, and aligned with Agency style guidelines. You'll use judgment to ensure products deliver clear analysis, answer key questions, provide a bottom-line-up-front summary, remain consistent with prior work, and incorporate supporting elements like graphics, tables, and appendices. Daily tasks include proofreading for clarity, tone, concision, logic, grammar, organization, and format compliance; assembling final products with text, references, and visuals; and interpreting guidance to meet document requirements while ensuring timely delivery. You'll develop and maintain expertise in tools like word processing programs and databases and perform ongoing quality control checks for editing, flow, classification, and graphic integration. At the GG-13 level, you'll work more independently as an expert, providing substantive edits on complex analysis and products, mentoring junior staff, suggesting improvements to senior leaders, leading teams on projects, representing your office in style working groups, and participating in setting Agency-wide editing standards. This role demands flexibility to handle shifting priorities and short deadlines while fostering effective collaborations.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR IN A CANDIDATE

  • Proficiency in proofreading and technical editing for clarity, tone, concision, grammar, consistency, and style guide adherence (e.g., applying appropriate style guides and/or developing custom style sheets).
  • Strong analytical and evaluative skills to assess content for audience fit, logical structure, technical accuracy, and alignment with Agency policies.
  • Expertise in production tools, including word processing programs, databases, and authoring tools for assembling and formatting complex documents with graphics and tables.
  • Ability to perform quality assurance throughout production, including line editing, flow optimization, classification review, and integration of visuals.
  • Judgment and initiative to interpret guidelines, recommend process improvements, mentor junior staff, and coordinate multi-team projects under tight deadlines.
  • Communication and relationship-building skills to provide feedback, train staff, and represent the organization in policy or style discussions.

All applicants must be U.S. citizens at the time of application.
