Internship Overview
The Downtown Maryville Alliance (DMA) in partnership with the MC Downtown Center is seeking a Maryville College student for a summer internship to support Downtown Maryville arts, entertainment, and event programming. This internship provides hands-on experience in event planning, arts administration, and community engagement, while offering meaningful exposure to how a Main Street organization operates in partnership with local businesses, artists, and institutions.
Timeframe: Summer, June-August 2026
Compensation: $2,000 for the summer
This position is designed to complement academic coursework and is eligible for college credit through Maryville College, pending departmental approval.
Internship Focus
This internship is ideal for a student interested in:
- Hospitality and entertainment programming
- Event planning and production
- Nonprofit and downtown management
- Creative revitalization ideas and public events
- Creation and execution of marketing materials
- Organic and paid digital media management opportunities
The intern will play an active role in planning, coordination, and execution of downtown events, while also serving as a bridge between DMA, MC Downtown Center and the Maryville College community.
Key Responsibilities
Event Planning & Execution (Primary Focus)
- Assist with planning and execution of 3rd Thursday Art Walk(s) (June)
- Support planning and on-site execution of the Hops in the Hills (June)
- Participate in planning discussions for summer initiatives, including:
- Levitt Concert Series (June–July)
- Make Music Day (June)
- Assist with artist coordination, vendor logistics, schedules, and event-day needs
- Provide on-site event support, including setup, breakdown, and volunteer coordination
Community & Campus Engagement
- Help strengthen connections between DMA and the Maryville College community
- Coordinate outreach to students, faculty, and campus groups related to events
- Support collaboration with:
- Downtown businesses
- Artists and performers
- The MC Downtown Center
- Share student perspective to help DMA better engage college audiences
Organizational Learning & Participation
- Attend and participate in DMA committee meetings
- Gain exposure to Tennessee Main Street principles and downtown revitalization work
- Observe nonprofit operations, planning processes, and community partnerships
Time Commitment & Schedule
- Part-time summer internship, hours determined in coordination with academic requirements
- Typical commitment: 8–16 hours per week during the semester
- Some evening and weekend hours required during events
- Schedule coordinated around meeting and event schedule and summer commitments
Supervision & Mentorship
- Co-supervised by the Executive Director of the Downtown Maryville Alliance and the Director of the Maryville College Downtown Center
- Internship goals and learning outcomes coordinated with Maryville College faculty as needed
- Regular check-ins to support learning, reflection, and professional development
Qualifications
- Current Maryville College student
- Interest in hospitality, arts, entertainment, event planning, marketing or community engagement
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Reliable, organized, and willing to assist with hands-on tasks
- Comfortable interacting with the public
No prior event experience required — training and support will be provided.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the internship, the student will:
- Gain hands-on experience planning and executing public events
- Understand how arts and entertainment programming supports downtown vitality
- Build professional communication and coordination skills
- Develop connections within the downtown and college communities
- Gain exposure to nonprofit and Main Street organizational structures
Academic Credit
- Internship is intended to qualify for academic credit through Maryville College
- Student is responsible for meeting college requirements and coordinating with faculty advisors
