About the Role

As a Communications & Campaigns Intern, you will play an important role in shaping the stories, messages, and digital content that help power InReach’s mission. This internship is ideal for students pursuing Journalism, Communications, Media Studies, or similar fields who want meaningful, hands-on experience in digital storytelling, campaign development, donor engagement, and nonprofit communications.

Communications & Campaigns

You will directly support the planning and promotion of major organization-wide campaigns, including:

  • 1M Lives by 2030 Campaign → A donor-centered effort to connect 1 million LGBTQ+ people with safe, verified resources.
  • #TransMascFutures Campaign → A trans-led storytelling and advocacy initiative uplifting trans masculine communities.

Internship Details

  • Summer 2026 Dates: June 8, 2026 -August 7, 2026.
  • Required hours per week: 12 (*interns can select their own hours–Monday through Friday–based on their schedule/time zone; all interns will use InReach's volunteer management system to log their hours for accountability)
  • Location: Fully remote (from anywhere in the United States, Canada or Mexico)
  • Compensation: This is an unpaid internship. However, because we value the time and labor of our interns, we provide:
  • Support for academic credit and documentation for your institution.
  • Structured skills training equivalent to early-career professional development programs.
  • Eligibility for a detailed reference letter or LinkedIn endorsement upon successful completion.
  • Meaningful impact work that supports LGBTQ+ individuals facing discrimination, displacement, and crisis.

Responsibilities

As a Communications & Campaigns Intern, you may:

Storytelling & Content Creation

  • Write compelling donor appeals, e-newsletters, and impact stories for diverse audiences.
  • Support Substack posts and social media content that center the voices and experiences of trans and queer communities.
  • Draft press-style releases, sponsorship proposals, and outreach emails.

Campaign Development & Digital Strategy

  • Contribute to the editorial development of campaign materials across platforms.
  • Conduct research to identify storytelling opportunities and media trends related to LGBTQ+ issues.
  • Assist with donor engagement using tools such as MailChimp and CRM systems.

Collaboration & Analytics

  • Track performance metrics for outreach materials (e.g., open rates, engagement).
  • Support outreach to press, sponsors, and community partners.
  • Collaborate closely with InReach’s Executive Director and communications staff on campaign strategy.

Who You Are

We encourage you to apply if you:

  • Are majoring in Journalism, Communications, Media Studies, Marketing, or a related field.
  • Have strong written communication and research skills.
  • Are passionate about LGBTQ+ rights, digital storytelling, and social impact communications.
  • Are organized, self-motivated, and comfortable working remotely.
  • Are available 12 hours per week (Monday–Friday).

Digital Storytelling & Narrative Writing – Crafting compelling, audience-centered stories that elevate trans and queer voices across campaigns and platforms.

Nonprofit Communications – Developing donor appeals, newsletters, outreach emails, and campaign content aligned with mission-driven goals.

Campaign Planning & Content Strategy – Supporting multi-channel advocacy and fundraising campaigns from concept through execution.

Research & Editorial Development – Identifying media trends, storytelling opportunities, and relevant LGBTQ+ issues to inform content creation.

Social Media & Newsletter Support – Assisting with Substack, social media, and email communications to increase reach and engagement.
Analytics & Performance Tracking – Monitoring engagement metrics (open rates, clicks, reach) to help refine communications strategies.
Collaborative Remote Work – Working effectively with staff and partners in a fully remote, mission-driven nonprofit environment.
