Storyteller / Memoir Writer (Contract, Project-Based)
Stories to Last + Nobody Told Me
Our brands: Storiestolast.com Nobodytoldmebooks.com * Collegeessayguru.com
About Us
Stories to Last helps individuals, families, and organizations remember, record, and share the stories of their lives. Through custom memoirs, legacy books, and storytelling projects, we preserve not just what happened—but what it meant.
Our work is deeply personal. We sit with people, listen closely, and craft narratives that reflect their voice, their experiences, and their legacy with care, clarity, and heart.
Our sister brand, Nobody Told Me, creates practical, meaningful, and often humorous content for life’s major transitions—especially for young adults stepping into independence. Together, our brands are rooted in storytelling, connection, and real-world insight.
We’re growing—and looking to build a strong bench of talented storytellers to work with us on a project basis.
The Role
We’re looking for a skilled storyteller—someone who understands memoir, loves history, and is genuinely curious about people and their lives.
This is not just writing. It’s listening, interpreting, shaping, and honoring someone’s story.
You’ll work directly with clients to:
- Conduct thoughtful, engaging interviews (often with older adults)
- Build trust and create a comfortable, enjoyable storytelling experience
- Research historical context and background details
- Fact-check and organize large amounts of material
- Craft compelling, narrative-driven stories (with the pacing, structure, and depth of a novel—while remaining true to nonfiction)
You may also:
- Collaborate with designers and project managers to bring the full book to life
- Help gather and organize photos and materials from clients
- Communicate with clients throughout the process
- Revise and refine drafts based on feedback
- Occasionally help guide a project from start to finish
Who You Are
You’re a writer—but also a listener, a guide, and a thoughtful collaborator.
You likely have:
- Strong experience in memoir, narrative nonfiction, journalism, or biography
- Excellent interviewing skills and natural curiosity about people
- The ability to build rapport and trust quickly (especially with older or high-level clients)
- A deep respect for authentic voice—and the skill to preserve it
- Strong organizational skills (you can manage complexity without getting lost in it)
You’re someone who:
- Loves uncovering the meaning behind people’s stories
- Notices the small details that make a story come alive
- Can shape raw material into something compelling, clear, and emotionally resonant
AI + Modern Tools
We’re also looking for writers who are comfortable using AI thoughtfully.
That means:
- Using AI to support efficiency (research, structuring, light drafting, etc.)
- Creating strong prompts that save time without sacrificing quality
- Knowing where AI helps—and where human judgment, voice, and nuance matter most
Bottom line: we use AI as a tool, not a replacement for great storytelling.
Nice-to-Have (Optional)
If you’re interested, there may also be opportunities to:
- Contribute to marketing content (blogs, website copy, social media)
- Help develop storytelling-based products or resources
Work Structure
- Project-based (contract role)
- Scope varies: some projects may take days or weeks; others may span months or longer
- Potential for ongoing work with the right fit
- Some flexibility for hourly add-ons when project scope evolves (because it often does—books have a way of growing)
A Note on Where We Are
While Stories to Last has been around since 2007, we’re currently in an exciting growth phase—building systems, expanding offerings, and increasing volume over time.
That means:
- Work may start gradually
- Strong opportunity to grow with us
- A chance to be part of shaping something meaningful from the inside
If This Sounds Like You…
We’d love to hear from you.
Please send:
- A brief note about your experience and interest
- Relevant writing samples (memoir, narrative nonfiction, or similar)
- Any experience conducting interviews or working directly with clients
If you’re someone who believes that every life holds a story worth telling—and telling well… you’ll feel right at home here.
