About On Earth Peace:
On Earth Peace (OEP) is a nonprofit organization that develops and walks with leaders and communities who work for justice and peace, using the spiritual and practical disciplines of active nonviolence, community building, and conflict transformation.
We provide Kingian Nonviolence internships that equip young adults/students through direct training, skill development, and application in organizing experiences. Our interns develop initiatives to use nonviolence to address present and pressing issues of injustice and violence. OEP fosters and supports these initiatives through mentorship, consultation, training, and other resources.
Our work touches churches and community groups, children, youth and young adults, and individuals of all ages. OEP is an agency of the Church of the Brethren, an Historic Peace Church.

What You’ll Do
You will organize/coordinate peace education, events, and advocacy opportunities for children and youth (middle and high school), those who work with/support children and youth, and parents/guardians. You’ll help implement programming in line with On Earth Peace’s strategic priorities.
The primary role of this internship is as editor of the Agape Magazine for children, a bimonthly offering for children ages 8-12. Including:
- Identifying topics that each issue will address.
- Communicating with authors to write articles
- Writing articles and activities for the magazine
- Collaborating with the design team to produce the final magazine
- Promoting the magazine
- Creating supplemental activities for children and families using resources from the magazine
- Engaging with current resources for children to inform your work (ie looking at children's books and other writings about kids and how to talk to them about peace and justice issues)
Additional work may include:
For children:
- Coordinate children and youth programs.
- Coordinate OEP’s Children As Peacemakers: Equipping Resilient Leaders program. (this includes coordinating and facilitating monthly events.)
- Design/coordinate, facilitate, and/or promote children’s peace formation opportunities to OEP constituents.
- Review/recommend and inventory existing children’s peace education resources and storybooks.
For youth:
- Respond to requests for workshops for youth groups at conferences, Sunday School, youth group meetings. This may include coordinating and facilitating workshops.
- Coordinate and support our Community Engagement Grants for Youth Groups program. This includes accompanying youth groups through the application, education, implementation, and evaluation phases of the program.
- Attend/support partner activities for youth including Dunker Punks Podcast, Church of the Brethren retreats/conferences, etc.
- Assess children/youth's resources in Kingian Nonviolence and create a catalog to share with parents, educators, pastors, etc.
- Attend webinars to learn about different resources and approaches to child and youth peace education.
- Write blogs to let the OEP community know about resources for children and youth.

What You Can Learn as an OEP Intern

Kingian Nonviolence Conflict Reconciliation
- Kingian Nonviolence is a values-centered approach to conflict and social change organizing. It is rooted in the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, and the leaders of his era. Kingian Nonviolence teaches both the philosophy and skills of change.
- Among other things, you will learn Dr King’s 6 Principles and 6 Steps of Nonviolence; explore the 3 Social Dynamics of Nonviolence; and dive into Dr King’s key essays on nonviolence and leadership. You have the opportunity to receive a participation certificate for Core Training in Kingian Nonviolence.

Anti-Racism/Anti-Oppression (AR/AO)
- OEP is on a journey towards incorporating Anti-Racism/Anti-Oppression within our organization and work. As a historically white organization, the AR/AO work that we’ve done thus far has helped to understand and address the issues within our organization and to take risks using our public voice and work.
- You will learn the AR/AO framework and practices that we use, including transforming institutional values, definitions of common AR/AO language, and a continuum we use to assess our development as an anti-racist multicultural institution.

Organizing skills
- Ways to think about building power with relationships and strategic nonviolence
- How to hold a one-to-one relational organizing meeting (including prep, notetaking, and followup)
- How to research and build relationships with movement leaders and movement organizations
- How to design and facilitate online events - webinars, book groups, organizing meetings

Communication skills
- How to create effective public written communications - blog posts, promotional text, etc.
- Best practices for written (email) and real time (virtual, phone, etc) communication with your teammates, supervisor, and OEP constituents
- Experience working in groups to meet collectively-held goals
- Addressing conflict directly with teammates or constituents
- Addressing intersectionality with teammates regarding identity and social justice

- How to create webpages and event pages with OEP’s platform
- How to create powerful email blasts
- How to use our CRM (Nationbuilder) to keep track of people and their involvement
- Using Zoom to schedule and host events or meetings
What We’re Looking For
- Do you have a passion for teaching peace? Do you enjoy interacting with children? We’re looking for someone with:
- Experience working with kids, this can be formal or informal experience as a camp counselor, teacher, babysitter, etc.
- Interest in developing educational content.
- Willingness to record videos for our Read Aloud project.
- Ability to do research.
- Writing skills for blog and newsletters.
- Strong editing skills
- Interest in connecting and supporting adults who work with kids.
- Curiosity and commitment to community growth and peace project development
- Ability to exercise active listening, encouragement and youth mentorship
- Ability to work constructively both individually and within a team (fellow interns)
What to expect in an internship year
Our internships are offered for 15-week terms @ approximately 10 hours/week, and are renewable up to one calendar year or 600 hours. OEP interns work as part of a cohort of organizers to carry out the functions of their internship. Weekly meetings via zoom and daily check availability by email is expected. As you gain experience, you will be able to carry out more powerful and meaningful initiatives. During your interview, we can provide a rough outline of what to expect in each term of a full-year position.
Location
This job is remote and will be done from your school or home. You will need good reliable internet and phone access and a working computer. You will need enough time in your schedule to be available for regular phone and zoom meetings, as well as be reachable as needed by email, phone, text, and video call.
Position Available
These jobs are available all three semesters (fall, spring, summer) on a rolling basis. We are open to more than one intern organizer at a time working in some of these areas.
