Office of Inclusive Design Director

TITLE: Office of Inclusive Design Director 

CATEGORY: ASUW Services 

REPORTS TO: Personnel Director 

 

 

JOB SUMMARY: 

The ASUW Office of Inclusive Design Director is responsible for overseeing the affairs of the OID. This includes but is not limited to: supporting RSOs and ASUW entities to improve accessibility in events and organizational practices, on-campus advocacy and outreach to represent students that may require accommodations, working directly with campus stakeholders on issues relating to inclusive design, budget management and other administrative duties. The Director manages the Inclusive Events Fund and the related form in which RSO/ASUW leaders can apply for funds to support accessibility measures for their events including ASL interpreters, CART captioners, low stimulation spaces, and more. Once an application is received, the director reviews the event plan with the RSO/ASUW leader, coordinates between the UW Disability Services Office and the entity, as well as provides in-person support. The Director is also responsible for supporting accessibility considerations beyond events, including reviewing digital and print communications for accessibility and assisting in the development of resources and education that promote proactive accessibility practices for student groups and ASUW entities.  

 

 

 

 

JOB DESCRIPTION: 

Support RSOs and ASUW entities in planning inclusively designed events, covering aspects such as physical accessibility, scent-free spaces, microphone use, ingredient labels, low-stimulation alternatives, ASL interpretation, CART captioning, remote access, and more.  

Assist RSOs and ASUW entities in applying for accommodation support through the Inclusive Events Fund; coordinate with the UW Disability Services Office, and SAO Adviser as needed.  

Manage the Inclusive Events Fund, maintain accurate records of applications and expenses, and attend Finance & Budget Committee meetings when applicable.   

Create, maintain, and distribute an inclusive events checklist and social media accessibility checklist for RSOs and ASUW entities.  

Coordinate with the OCOMMS Director to ensure accessible guidelines for digital and print media are consistently followed across ASUW.  

Develop and execute a marketing strategy to promote OID services and raise accessibility awareness, using methods such as social media, workshops, or informational materials.  

Gather and synthesize student feedback to inform OID priorities and better serve the student body.  

Hire, train, and manage OID interns and volunteers; hold regular check-ins and support their professional development.  

Represent OID with campus-wide stakeholders to advance inclusive design collaboration.  

Present to ASUW employees on inclusive vs. universal design and accessibility practices at Autumn Orientation, in coordination with SAO and the Personnel Director.   

Prepare, submit, and present the OID annual budget proposal; maintain an updated expense spreadsheet throughout the year.  

Complete a thorough transition with your successor, including uploading transition documents before the last day of Spring Quarter.  

Stay current with ADA regulations and relevant accessibility legislation to ensure OID guidance and resources reflect up-to-date legal standards. 

Establish and attend 2/hour of office hours a week, some of which are allowed to be held outside the Husky Union Building with the prior approval of the ASUW Personnel Director to provide outreach to the commissions’ community.  Advertisement of hours must be given at both the Husky Union Building and the outreach location. 

Prepare, submit and present a proposed annual budget according to the guidelines established by the ASUW Finance & Budget Committee for approval.  Provide supporting documentation for the budget proposal as needed. 

Prepare and submit quarterly reports detailing activities, budget status, and problems/suggestions according to the procedure set by the Director of Policy and Procedures and Personnel Director. 

Maintain and inform the ASUW Personnel Director and the Student Activities Office (SAO) adviser of all completed and missed office hours, including any absences due to sickness, personal emergencies or work-related trips. 

Meet with SAO adviser as needed and upon request, as well as participating in a quarterly evaluation process. 

Attend ASUW mandatory training sessions and staff meetings, including but not limited to ASUW Personnel meetings and ASUW Autumn Orientation which will be held September 2026. 

Review and adhere to conditions of employment as stated in the ASUW Personnel Policy, the signed ASUW Employment Contract and the Student Employment Handbooks. All actions must also follow the laws and procedures set by ASUW, SAO and the State of Washington. 

Responsible for initiating a thorough transition with your newly hired successor during the last week of the term; including the completion of comprehensive transition documents, that are uploaded to the ASUW transition page before the last day of Spring Quarter. 

 

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Familiarity with inclusive design principles and their practical applications.  

Understanding of how the accommodations model can disadvantage diverse student communities.  

Knowledge of basic digital accessibility (contrast, alt text, captioning, readability).  

Experience planning or supporting events.   

Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.  

Preferred: Background in Disability Studies or familiarity with the social model of disability.    

Preferred: Experience with overseeing a budget   

Must be a UW student enrolled in at least 6 undergraduate or 4 graduate credits, or on leave per Executive Order 50.
