High School Post Secondary Counselor
Equality Charter School (http://www.equalitycharterschool.org/) provides a high level of academic rigor in a nurturing learning community that will prepare scholars to be career-ready in college. Our mission is to ensure each scholar reaches individual academic and personal success through a nurturing, scholar-centered approach; and our approach is to serve any scholar, including those who are under-performing or who are from families in need of more resources.
We offer a positive school environment, we value academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs, we use proactive strategies for teaching appropriate behaviors, and we use project-based learning to engage scholars. Our holistic programming focuses on career exploration, extensive athletics, health, and music, and a host of special days, like career day and a borough-wide college fair, etc.
We are currently seeking a dynamic, energetic, motivated and inspiring individual to join our High School Guidance team. This position requires certification in counseling. Candidates with certification will be given preference. Please see a few of the key elements to be successful in the role below:
- Manage a caseload of up to 180 students (90 during the first year in the position) who are pursuing college/career pathways by providing mentoring, academic support, career development, and social-emotional development support during their 1st two years after high school graduation
- Conduct and track 1-on-1 check-ins with all alumni on caseload
- Proactively reach out to high school graduates not enrolled in postsecondary education to provide guidance about their college and career options, and to support them in the re-enrollment process in accordance with the student’s interests
- Develop and maintain meaningful relationships with Equality Alumni on caseload and their families via phone, text, social media, email, and individual/group meetings
- Conduct visits to meet with students who have not followed through on plans
- Assist Equality Alumni on caseload with application, enrollment and financial aid processes, including transfers between programs and institutions and changes or career
- Travel to campuses, where students on caseload are enrolled, in order to meet face-to-face with students and campus partners
- Connect students to wrap-around services to support their physical and socio-emotional health, including but not limited to emergency funds, mental health counseling referrals, and immigration consultation referrals
- Collect and analyze college persistence data to determine enrollment trends, barriers, and student needs
- Develop and maintain career partnerships with businesses and organization to strengthen and expand our internship program as well as to provide opportunities for our alumni seeking a transition to the “world of work” immediately after high school
- Design and provide timely reports regarding postsecondary success program outputs and outcomes
- Focus on college readiness and planning for seniors through CCLP class
- Special projects: College Fair & College rep visits
- Work in partnership with Principal to track, adjust, action plan the needs for students to persist and enroll in post secondary endeavors.
