Aspen Daily News Summer Journalism Internship Program
Program Overview:
The Aspen Daily News is proud to announce a paid, 10-week summer internship for aspiring journalists, made possible by the Aspen Daily News Journalism Fund. This program is designed to provide real-world newsroom experience in one of the most dynamic local news environments in the country. Interns will gain hands-on reporting experience, work alongside seasoned journalists and contribute meaningful stories to the Aspen Daily News.
Internship Details:
- Duration: 10 weeks (Summer 2025)
- Compensation: $500 per week ($5,000 total)
- Location: Aspen, Colorado (Housing options TBD)
- Eligibility: Open to current college students or recent graduates with a strong interest in journalism
Program Structure:
Weeks 1-2: Embedding & Orientation
- Meet the newsroom staff and key editorial leaders
- Attend editorial meetings and planning sessions
- Shadow staff reporters to observe the local reporting process
- Attend community events and civic meetings to gain context on the Roaring Fork Valley
Weeks 3-6: Guided Reporting & Story Assignments
- Work directly with the editor-in-chief, managing editor and contributing editor
- Receive weekly reporting assignments from the editor
- Research and produce one byline per week
- Assist staff reporters with background research, interviews and on-the-ground reporting
Weeks 7-10: Independent Reporting & Story Pitching
- Increase reporting output to 1-2 bylines per week
- Develop and pitch original story ideas based on time spent in the community
- Work closely with former editor-in-chief and current development director Megan Tackett on story development and feedback
- Continue to attend editorial meetings and refine reporting and writing skills
