Social Media & Communications Intern

Pelican Harbor Seabird Station is Miami’s premier native wildlife hospital evolving into a world-class wildlife rescue, rehab, release, and education center. We are in the process of building our new hospital which is bringing much growth to our organization. 

Currently, we are hiring for a Content Creation/Communications Intern. This position is ideal for an individual who wants to gain experience in the non-profit sector; particularly an individual interested in communications, social media, and marketing.

The internship lasts approximately 12 weeks in duration, for 12-18 hours per week. A personal laptop is preferred but not required. Work location is on-site, either at the clinic or at our administrative office located in Little River.

PLEASE NOTE: This internship is unpaid, but the intern may use this internship for academic credit if applicable with assistance from the Intern Manager.

The intern will be reporting directly to the Communications Manager and assisting in many different aspects of our organization’s operations. 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in capturing photos and videos of our wildlife rehabilitation efforts, ensuring content is appropriate for publication.
  • Document engaging stories of the wildlife patients we care for from rescue to release.
  • Collaborate with the Communications Manager to develop engaging, educational, & informative visual content for various social media platforms.
  • Data and content organization
  • Assist with event planning and coordination.
  • Support the creation of presentation materials for donors and education programs.
  • Research social media trends to keep the organization's content relevant and increase growth.
  • Use analytic tools to improve and monitor engagement.

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Gain experience in management of social media, marketing efforts and content creation.
  2. Develop skills in storytelling, brand consistency, photography/videography.
  3. Adaptability in engaging various audiences and maintaining interest.
  4. Gaining insight into the inner workings of a nonprofit organization, including collaboration across teams and handling administrative tasks.

Qualifications: 

  • Proficiency in social media platforms, including Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.
  • Knowledge of editing tools and graphic design.
  • Written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of wildlife/animal behavior a plus!
