Wildlife Education Intern
Pelican Harbor Seabird Station offers offer a unique internship opportunity that allows students to receive hands-on experience in the operation of a high-volume wildlife hospital, wildlife education, outreach, and program development and the opportunity to shape how we educate the public about our mission.
A PHSS intern is ideally an individual who wants to learn about all aspects of native wildlife, South Florida ecosystems, and wildlife rehabilitation and is intended for those individuals interested in a career in formal or informal wildlife/environmental education, conservation, or similar nonprofit work.
A personal laptop is preferred but not required. Work location is on-site, either at the clinic or at our administrative office located in Little River.
This intern will be reporting directly to the Wildlife Educator and assisting in many different aspects of our organization’s operations. These duties cover multiple areas as follows:
• Assist in developing and delivering educational programs and presentations to schools, community groups, and the public.
• Support outreach efforts by creating and distributing educational materials (brochures, social media, newsletters, etc.), protocols, and structured lessons.
• Gain hands-on experience in logistics, management, and execution for fundraising or outreach events.
• Help coordinate and participate in community events and tabling opportunities. Actively cultivate and secure community collaboration and strengthen relationship building.
• Assist in the care and handling of educational ambassador animals, as needed
• Perform administrative tasks related to education and outreach with a priority on maintaining databases and accurate data about events.
Qualifications:
Students applying for this internship that would be strong candidates are those that are responsible, able to work in a fast-paced environment, organized, self-starters and efficient in time management. Prior experience with public speaking, outreach, or animal care, education or nonprofit experience/knowledge is a plus but not required.
The ideal candidate should have an interest in wildlife, conservation, environmental education, or related field, strong verbal and written communication skills, and be comfortable speaking to groups of all ages. Spanish language proficiency is a plus.
