U.S. Geological Survey Student Field Technician
USGS Student Contract Position
The Williamsburg Field Office is responsible for operating and maintaining more than 55 real-time stream gages and 3 continuous water-quality monitors. This work supports the Ohio–Kentucky–Indiana Water Science Center (OKI WSC) of the U.S. Geological Survey and over 20 of our cooperators.
The student contract associated with this position will support streamgaging in Kentucky and the mission of the USGS. All work will be conducted in accordance with U.S. Geological Survey Standard Operating Procedures and USGS Techniques and Methods, with strict quality assurance and quality control protocols always followed.
The student will be expected to work collaboratively toward shared goals and perform fieldwork in a wide range of weather conditions. Duties include using field computers and specialized software, operating field vehicles (including large trucks or vans), and working safely in, on, over, and around water under varying conditions. The position also requires comfort working on bridges near fast-moving traffic and operating from boats. Strong communication skills are essential, including the ability to follow directions and receive regular feedback from supervisors and peers. The position regularly requires significant physical activity, dexterity, and agility, including climbing and working from tall ladders or scaffolding; navigating slippery or icy riverbanks, steep or rocky terrain, and fast moving water; lifting heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds or more; and crouching or crawling in confined or restricted spaces.
Applicants should have a general background in environmental science obtained through coursework, volunteer activities, or previous experience. While not required, prior fieldwork experience is strongly preferred and should be documented on the resume. All additional training will be provided.
