Internship Overview

The Internship program provides an opportunity for a student or recent graduate to gain hands‑on professional experience while supporting the work of The Salvation Army. This internship is designed to offer meaningful exposure to nonprofit operations, project‑based work, and professional development in a mission‑driven organization.

The intern will work closely with staff members and may contribute to research, analysis, administrative support, program development, and special projects, depending on departmental needs and the intern’s interests.


Key Responsibilities 

Assists MMM in planning, coordinating, and executing media communications initiatives, including those for The War Cry and Peer, which require discretion and sensitivity.

 

Collaborates with the MMM to plan, review, gather, and prepare content for publication across social media channels, newsletters and website publishing platforms.

 

Assists with generating social media content in various formats, including written copy, graphics and short form video, ensuring consistency in messaging and intentional application of communication strategies.

 

Supports the creation and maintenance of schedules for all electronic communications and monitors timelines to ensure deadlines are met.

 

Assists with the coordination and execution of long form video projects and podcasts as needed.

 

Uploads website content on thewarcry.org and peermag.org.

 

Collects and reports on social media and website analytics; leads a monthly media presentation reviewing metrics, trends, and performance insights.

 

Create newsletters to be sent at least monthly.

 

Recommends strategies to improve the quality, reach, and effectiveness of national publications content across both electronic and print media.

 

Assists in developing and implementing marketing strategies for national publications within The Salvation Army structure.

 

Assists in developing and implementing marketing strategies for national publications to external audiences, including identifying partnerships with colleges, private schools and youth organizations. Collaborates with the MMM to develop and implement plans to increase circulation.

 

Researches industry standards and best practices related to web-based communications, social media, graphic design and video production.

 

Analyzes research findings and prepares reports for section leadership as needed.

 

Maintains a cooperative and collaborative work environment to support team objectives.


 

Learning Opportunities

This internship is intended to be a learning experience. The intern will:

  • Gain exposure to nonprofit and/or faith‑based organizational operations
  • Develop professional skills such as communication, research, time management, and collaboration
  • Work under the guidance of experienced professionals
  • Establish learning goals at the start of the internship and receive feedback throughout the summer

 

Qualifications

  • Preferred applicants should be enrolled in a Communications, Marketing, English, Creative Writing, Public Relations Bachelor’s program, or similar program. Recent graduates are also eligible.
  • Knowledge of Macintosh computers.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of the English language including proper grammar and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of social media channels such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, TikTok, Twitter (X) and YouTube.
  • Ability to learn and use digital tools and software platforms supporting social media management, email marketing, content creation, website management and multimedia communications.
  • Ability to analyze established strategies and recommend improvements to the quality and reach of national publications.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks effectively based on departmental requirements.
  •  Ability to maintain the confidential nature of the work.


 

Time Commitment

  • Internship Dates: May 18, 2026 – July 31, 2026
  • Hours: Up to 25 hours per week
  • Duration: Summer 2026
