2026 - Met Scholars Transit Community Outreach Intern
WHO WE ARE
As an intern for the Community Outreach & Engagement team in the Metro Transit division, you will join a team that works to connect the public with information about Metro Transit generally, as well as specific project questions about large-scale changes that the agency will be making. This position will contribute to the success of our Outreach program by providing assistance to Coordinators and projects and broaden our ability to successfully engage the community with information, key project questions, and opportunities for public input to shape agency projects and policy.
The Met Scholars and Ability internship programs are 12-week leadership development internships that provide distinctive professional experience for students from a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and abilities. These interns work the same types of meaningful positions as traditional interns and must meet the same qualifications. However, as a Met Scholar or Ability intern, you will also spend each Friday with the rest of your cohort in professional and leadership development programming, gaining new skills and creating a resume-building career pathway. The Met Scholars leadership and professional development program welcomes students and/or recent graduates from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. The Ability internship program at the Met Council is designed to increase opportunities for students and/or recent graduates who have disabilities.
Internship Information:
- Length: Summer with a chance to extend to school year
- Hours: Full-time summer and Part-time during school year if applicable
- Start Date: 06/01/2026
- Location: Minneapolis and St. Louis Park
NOTE: This position is eligible for a hybrid (both remote and onsite) telework arrangement.
What does an internship with the Metropolitan Council entail?
Our internships are designed to provide students meaningful work, be an introduction to public service and a chance to discover the Metropolitan Council.
Who is the Metropolitan Council?
The Metropolitan Councils made up of several operating divisions that service the Twin Cities Metropolitan area in a number of ways.
- Metro Transit provides bus and light rail public transportation for the greater metropolitan area
- Environmental Services manages wastewater treatment plants and the regional wastewater collection system and water planning for the seven-county metropolitan region
- Community Development is responsible for helping the Council shape its regional growth plan and Metro HRA provides affordable housing programs in the region
- Metropolitan Transportation Services (MTS) is responsible for the transportation planning functions as the Twin Cities metropolitan planning organization (MPO) for transportation
- Regional Administration provides support services (Finance, Payroll, HR, etc.) for the Council
What you would do in this job
- Assist Outreach Coordinators with execution of outreach plan duties including direct contact with community via events, bus ride-along, and community meetings
- Assist Outreach Coordinators with review and creation of project documents to engage community
- Assist Outreach Coordinators with notetaking, data entry, and data review
What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)
- Must be enrolled in a degree seeking program (Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD.) or be a recent graduate (within the last 12 months) from a degree program.
- Candidate's residence must be in Minnesota or Wisconsin during the internship.
- An UNOFFICIAL transcript required to be attached to application.
- A valid MN/WI driver's license
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Some experience with public speaking
- Strong communications skills
- Experience with data entry
DEGREE PROGRAM/AREA OF STUDY PREFERRED
- Anthropology, Communications, Humanities, Public Affairs, or Urban Studies

If you are new to the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test (safety sensitive positions only), and a background check which verifies education, employment, and criminal history.
