Job Description:
We are seeking passionate and knowledgeable Historic Interpreters to engage with visitors and bring the history of the 1860s-1920s homestead era to life. This position involves conducting informative conversations, demonstrations, and activities that educate the public about the daily life, traditions, and practices of early homesteading.
Historic interpreters will begin their time at MOR 5 weeks before the house opens, with training twice a week, Tuesdays & Thursdays from 6:00 pm. to 8:00 pm., to get everyone ready for the summer.
The Living History Farm opens on May 25th and closes for the main season on September 1st. The farm is open to the public 7 days a week and is staffed from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. There are special events in October & December that Historic interpreters will be required to work.
Additionally, there is an opportunity for this position to fulfill internship requirements if needed.
Position Responsibilities:
· Interpretation and Demonstration: Provide period-accurate demonstrations of 1860s-1910s homestead practices, engaging visitors in conversation to share insights on historical homesteading life, tools, and techniques.
· Opening and Closing Procedures: Assist with the opening and closing of the site, including preparing for daily activities, ensuring the grounds are maintained, and performing other necessary shift-related tasks.
· Program Assistance: Assist the Historic Interpretation and Programs Manager with implementing new programs.
· Event Assistance: Support various events such as the Haunted Mountain Theater, Hops and History, and Homestead Holiday by helping with setup, guiding participants, and ensuring smooth event operations.
· Ongoing Training and Compliance: Remain current with all training and policies as required to ensure up-to-date knowledge and adherence to organizational guidelines.
· Safety and Policy Adherence: Maintain a safe environment by following MOR standards and policies, ensuring all activities are conducted in a secure and responsible manner.
· Additional Responsibilities: Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support the effective operation of the site and the guest experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Knowledge of 1860s-1920s homesteading practices, or a willingness to learn.
· Enthusiasm for history and educating the public.
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
· Flexibility to assist with special events and tasks as needed.
· Ability to work evenings/weekends as required
