We're building Athira (athira.tech), an instant, on-demand microtutoring marketplace that connects students with tutors for real-time 10-20 minute sessions. Think Uber for learning—immediate help when you're stuck, not scheduled hours later.

We're capturing how humans learn in real-time through live video sessions, collaborative whiteboards, and behavioral data that maps the actual problem-solving process. This isn't another course platform, but rather it's infrastructure for instant, personalized education.

What We're Looking For

We need a Founding Frontend Engineer to own the student and tutor experience. You'll work directly with the founding team to transform our functional prototype into a lightning-fast, intuitive product that students trust in their most frustrated moments.

You'll Own:

  • Live Session Interface: Optimize our WebRTC video experience, collaborative whiteboard, and real-time interaction tools for minimal latency and maximum clarity
  • Marketplace UX: Build the core flows: instant matching, session extensions, tutor discovery, and payment.
  • Performance & Polish: Ship features rapidly while maintaining a clean, responsive interface that works flawlessly across devices
  • Design System: Partner with design to establish component libraries and interaction patterns from the ground up
  • User Psychology: Translate friction points from user data into technical solutions that reduce drop-off and build trust

We're Looking For:

  • Proven Execution: Shipped production code for real users (ideally consumer-facing products or marketplaces)
  • Modern Stack Proficiency: Strong React (we use React + Vite), JavaScript/TypeScript, and state management experience
  • Real-Time Systems: Experience with WebRTC, WebSockets, or other live interaction technologies (huge plus)
  • Speed + Quality: You move fast, iterate based on data, and care deeply about UX details
  • Startup DNA: Comfortable with ambiguity, high ownership, and direct impact on product direction

This is a founding-level role with significant equity. You'll have full autonomy over frontend architecture and direct influence on product strategy.
