The Oregon State University-Cascades invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 9-month, fixed-term, Assistant Professor of Teaching: Microbiology position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Dean of Academic Affairs.

Appointment at the Assistant Professor of Teaching rank is anticipated; however, appointment at a promoted rank may be considered depending upon the qualifications of the successful candidate.

This position is located in Bend, Oregon.

As an Assistant Professor of Teaching at Oregon State University-Cascades, the responsibilities of this position consist of teaching courses in the Division of Agricultural Sciences, Forestry, Science, and Earth Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences on the Cascades campus in support of the Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Environmental Sciences, Natural Resources, and Sustainability programs. Additionally, this position will be expected to establish and/or continue independent scholarly research; and/or conduct research on teaching and pedagogy; work with students on undergraduate research projects; serve on departmental, college, and University committees; and providing professional and community service.

This fixed term professorial rank requires a doctoral-level degree, emphasizes excellence in teaching beyond instruction, and includes a percentage of FTE devoted to research and scholarship. It couples dominant duties in for-credit instruction with duties related to curricular design and development and/or pedagogical strategies and practices, develop and lead a research program and participate in scholarly activities including designing and conducting research projects and writing papers for peer reviewed journals and to contribute to the educational mission of the campus supporting students in taught classes, curriculum development, and mentoring activities.

The disciplinary focus is related to algal ecophysiology spanning from cell level processes to regional and global interrogation of algal behaviors and impacts. Research projects may include laboratory-based experiments, ship-board measurements, and application of remote sensing to further knowledge of carbon cycling. The position anticipates opportunities for applied research involving optimizing algal production for agricultural and pharmaceutical purposes.

Cooperation with OSU faculty both at Cascades and the greater OSU community is important. Research mentoring of undergraduate students at OSU -Cascades campus is expected and interaction with graduate students in collaborations throughout OSU is encouraged.

The position will be located at OSU -Cascades and will advance the land-grant mission of Oregon State University as a university focused on big discoveries that drive big solutions and directly serve OSU -Cascades’ mission including building research supports that enhance student learning. This position will be a unique and highly impactful bridge between undergraduate educational experiences and nationally recognized research programs tailored to the unique opportunities on the OSU -Cascades campus.

Key Responsibilities

70% Student Related Activities

• Develop and teach courses for OSU -Cascades, consisting of a mix of courses: large and small, and potentially, a mix of modalities.
• Engage with the College of Agricultural Sciences, College of Forestry, College of Science and the College of Earth Ocean and Atmospheric Science, as necessary to coordinate program development and deployment within the interdisciplinary and integrated nature of OSU -Cascades campus.
• Demonstrate a sustained commitment to creating and maintaining an inclusive learning environment.
• Mentor undergraduate students in experiential learning projects.
• Hold office hours.
• Mentor and advise students on professional aspects of the field.

20% Research and integrative scholarship

• Maintain an active, research program capable of receiving external funding.
• Plan, lead and communicate research on algal physiology and its relationship to aquatic health, carbon cycle science, climate, and biotechnological applications.
• Research approaches will include use of remotely sensed data, in-situ collections, and experimental manipulations of algal cultures. Development of models to provide predictive capability and deeper mechanistic understanding of ecosystem processes.
• Participation and collaboration with researchers at OSU -Cascades, and across OSU colleges is expected. Work with faculty and administrative staff on broader OSU and multi-institutional research, or national and international initiatives. Duties will support the vision, mission and goals of the Cascades campus and the University.
• Publish research in peer-reviewed journals. Disseminate research results through presentations at regional, national, and international professional meetings. Participate in disciplinary and interdisciplinary workshops to explore gaps in knowledge and opportunities for collaboration and research program expansion.
• Develop resources for outreach and training in the broader community including underrepresented groups.

10% Service

• Participate as a collegial member of the unit and perform appropriate service that contributes to the effectiveness of the Campus, the College, the University, and the profession.
• Service includes participation in and leadership of Campus, College, and University committees, attendance at faculty meetings, mentorship of junior faculty, and contributions to outreach activities.
• Participation in service to the profession, including serving as a consultant to Industry partners, reviewer or editor for journals and conferences, leadership roles in professional organizations, reviewing proposals, and conference organization, should be pursued as appropriate.
• Serve on professional society committees and panels, review manuscripts for journals in the field.

What You Will Need

• PhD in Marine Biology or closely related field.
• Demonstrated ability or significant potential for excellent teaching.
• Must have completed doctoral level courses or research in algal physiology or peer reviewed research in the field in the last 5 years, documented experience in field work at sea, 3 years of experience in computational data analysis with evidence of this expertise through publications or project reports, experience as a collaborator/working group member on at least two multi-institutional research projects, at least 5 peer-reviewed publications and have presented at a minimum of 2 national or international conferences; demonstrable leadership skills; must have successfully secured at least one independent research grant or fellowship with details of the funding amount and project scope.
• Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, research, and student mentorship.

• Current or future research topic(s) that is/are aligned with the university strategic plan, Prosperity Widely Shared, and commensurate with OSU -Cascades campus.
• Interest or track record in commercialization of research.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

The field research components involve coordinating and overseeing shipboard sampling and seawater incubations. Assisting in data collection with collaborators, especially optical retrievals. Computational work involves analysis of large data sets, which can be done remotely. Laboratory components of the position involve experiment design and coordination of laboratory sampling efforts.
