Youth Counselor Assistant

The hiring amount will be between $22.10 - $24.01 an hour. This is a non-exempt, temporary (variable/limited-hour) position, and is not eligible for city benefits.  

This Youth Counselor Assistant provides direct care and support for youth enrolled in the Community Attention Youth Internship Program (CAYIP) and the Teens GIVE Service Learning Program. In Teens GIVE, the primary function involves oversight, organizing, and facilitating community service and recreational activities for groups of teens. In CAYIP, the primary function involves case management, job coaching and work place readiness counseling. Other responsibilities may include group facilitation, transportation, and administrative projects as needed to support the program; does related work as required. Primarily and most frequently the work is done with a collaborative team approach under direct supervision.

Please note that this position supports summer programming. Selected individual(s) must be available during the summer program, which runs from June 8 through July 31, 2026, and requires 30 or more hours per week. Planning and preparation may begin several weeks prior to the start of the program, and selected individual(s) may assist with those activities.

Education and Experience: Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the required knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.
 

  • High school diploma or GED AND general knowledge or experience which reflects the ability to provide supervision and support to youth and families.

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.

Preferred:

  • College coursework in behavioral sciences or human services. 

Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements:

  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Virginia Driver’s License and acceptable driving record according to City criteria.
  • Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check and pre-employment drug screen.
