Philadelphia Parks & Recreation is seeking seasonal Art Teachers.

  • Successful candidates must be a city of Philadelphia resident as a condition of employment.

After School Teaching Artists RSIs: Philadelphia Parks and Recreation hosts youth in around 100 after school programs through the city. PPR is looking for Recreation Specialty Instructors (RSIs) to teach Visual Arts classes by traveling to after school sites for 8-12 week enrichment programs. RSIs will be responsible for developing lesson plans, leading class projects and activities, setting up and cleaning up class, supervising children and addressing issues, monitoring supplies, and working with other staff on site.  Youth in the programs are ages 6 to 12. 

Visual Art Program Teaching Artist RSIs: Philadelphia Parks & Recreation has facilities across the city with the ability to host art classes for youth, adult, and seniors of varying abilities. PPR is seeking teaching artists to develop lesson plans and lead classes for youth and adults on weekdays in the evening and weekends. Note that there can be overlap and After School Teaching Artists can also earn hours in the evening and weekends teaching.

Summer Art Camp Teaching Artist RSIs: Philadelphia Parks & Recreation hosts a citywide visual arts specialty camp for youth ages 6 to 17.  PPR is seeking Teaching Artists to teach classes in this 6 week summer enrichment program.  RSIs will help develop lesson plans, lead art classes, and participate in culminating art show.  Each artist will teach a specialty including but not limited to: Painting & Drawing, Ceramics, Fiber Arts, Jewelry Making, Photography, Graphic Design…etc.

Employment dates are based on program dates. Summer Camp programs generally runs July-August. RSIs can apply for more than one program during different seasons. Some evenings and weekends may be necessary. 

Responsibilities

  • Create or follow premade lesson plans.
  • Lead youth in art activities.
  • Keep equipment and supplies in good condition, cleaning after each class.
  • Communicate with site supervisors/after school RSIs .
  • Meet with program coordinator as needed.
  • Attend trainings, workshops, and orientations as scheduled at field sites.
  • Assist with collection of artwork for art shows/contests
  • Assist with special programs as directed.
  • Perform related work as required.

 

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Prior knowledge of visual arts, developing lesson plans or following lesson plans and proper usage of art materials
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing with colleges and members of the public.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with participants, associates, and general public.
  • Ability to record data and create various types of reports.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to adhere to deadlines

 

Qualifications (Education and Experience)

  • Experience working with children.
  • Strong background in Visual Arts
  • Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade; 1-year college-level coursework preferred.
  • 1-year relevant work experience preferred
  • Completion of all necessary background checks
  • Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions of a position in this class.  
  • Use of Personal Vehicle and/or ability to travel to sites via public transit
