Underwriting and Actuarial Intern

We are excited to announce our 2026 Summer Internship program!

Our summer internship program runs from Tuesday, June 9th, to Wednesday July 29th 2026. The program is hybrid, with in-office work on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and remote work on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and we provide all necessary equipment to help you succeed in your role.

As an intern, you will work on real business projects, gaining exposure to various aspects of the company and having the opportunity to make an impact. You will also connect with Delta Dental employees across different business functions, helping you expand your professional network. Throughout the eight-week program, we’ll assist with resume and LinkedIn profile development and provide you with a LinkedIn Learning license. Interns will meet weekly to share experiences and learn from our business leaders. At the end of the program, interns will have the chance to have lunch with Delta Dental’s CEO.

Interns will be compensated at an hourly rate of $22.00.

What You’ll Be Doing

The Underwriting & Actuarial intern will support the team responsible for pricing dental and vision benefit products.  This role provides hands on exposure to how insurance products are evaluated, prices, and maintained, while working closely with Underwriting, Sales, and Regulatory partners. 

 

The intern will assist with proposal preparation, data review, renewals, and operational activities that support both new business and existing customers.  This internship is ideal for students interested in insurance, analytics, actuarial concepts, finance, or healthcare operations. 

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Underwriting & Pricing Support

  • Assist with preparing proposal and pricing information used by underwriters for dental and vision products.
  • Support small group renewals by helping review data, benefits, and pricing inputs.
  • Review benefit overviews and plan designs to ensure accuracy and completeness.

Cross‑Functional Coordination

  • Facilitate the flow of information and materials between Sales and Underwriting to support new business and renewals.
  • Assist with tracking and organizing documentation used during the underwriting and pricing process.

Data & Systems Support

  • Perform data entry and updates in underwriting and customer systems to maintain accurate records.
  • Assist with reviewing data used in pricing models and rating tools under the guidance of the team.

Regulatory & Operational Support

  • Assist with regulatory filings and documentation to support compliance requirements.
  • Support general underwriting and actuarial operational tasks as assigned.

What You’ll Be Learning.

During this internship, you will gain exposure to:

  • Core underwriting principles and basic actuarial concepts.
  • How dental and vision products are structured and priced.
  • The role underwriting and actuarial teams play within the insurance industry.
  • Systems and tools used in underwriting, such as databases, rating engines, and Salesforce
  • Cross-functional collaboration between Sales, Underwriting, and Regulatory teams.

  • Clear Verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong mathematical aptitude and analytical skills 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including organizing data and using basic formulas and functions

Experience, Education and Certifications Required 

 Experience/Education Required

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Data Analytics, or a related field 
  • Relevant coursework, academic projects, or prior internship experience involving data analysis or quantitative work is a plus, but not required 
  • Interest in insurance, underwriting, actuarial concepts, or healthcare finance is encouraged
  • Experience using generative AI to analyze financial and business data

Working Environment
