Staff Writer
General Description / Primary Purpose
The Staff Writer supports University Development and Alumni Engagement (UDAE) by creating compelling, accurate, and strategic written content that inspires philanthropy and strengthens alumni engagement. This position produces donor-impact stories, acknowledgements, stewardship materials, marketing copy, and multimedia scriptwriting while ensuring consistency in voice, tone, and brand standards across all publications. The Staff Writer also collaborates with internal partners to plan, schedule, and track content needs, ensuring high-quality deliverables that support fundraising priorities and institutional goals.
Job Functions
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Content Development & Storytelling
Research, write, and edit donor-impact stories, alumni profiles, and case statements for reports, publications, websites, videos, and digital campaigns.
Serve as the primary writer for donor acknowledgment letters, stewardship reports, proposals, and other constituent communications for major donors, alumni, and community partners of the University.
Conduct interviews with donors, students, faculty, and campus partners to gather information and craft compelling narratives.
Write and edit copy for brochures, memos, emails, website content, scripts, speeches, marketing collateral, and event materials.
Ensure all content reflects institutional voice, brand messaging, and fundraising best practices.
Collaborate with Communications, Public Relations, and Marketing teams to align messaging and ensure consistency across channels.
Proactively identify trends in higher-education fundraising, marketing, and digital communications to inform content direction.
Editorial Quality & Standards
Perform copyediting, proofreading, and quality control for UDAE-produced materials.
Develop, publish, and maintain templates, style guides, and content standards to ensure brand consistency.
Ensure that all digital and online publications meet ADA and web accessibility standards.
Manage timelines, schedules, and content workflows to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Collaboration & Administrative Support
Partner with development, stewardship, and alumni engagement teams, and university colleagues to support communication needs across UDAE.
Interpret and apply departmental policies to communications processes and content development.
Support university initiatives and special projects as assigned.
Marginal Functions
May serve on the Search & Screen Committee for Director-level and above positions.
May represent the University on local, system-wide, or state committees.
During declared campus emergencies, this position may be required to perform specific job-related duties at a designated off-campus location or place of residence.
