Minimum Requirements:
Attainment of a minimum of a bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university in Landscape Architecture, Landscape Design, Ornamental Horticulture, or a closely related field, and preferably a minimum of one year experience in landscape design or horticulture management and supervision; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements. Must possess a valid driver's license. Must possess a current Alabama Commercial Pesticide Applicators license or obtain one during the working test period (one year).
Examples of Work:
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) Creates landscape drawings for landscape improvements; prepares cost estimates; interprets landscape drawings; oversees implementation of drawings for landscape improvements; supervises the propagation and growing of bedding plants, shrubs, trees, vines and other plants; supervises the planting and maintenance of bedding plants, shrubs, trees, vines, turf and other plants; schedules, coordinates and supervises the application of herbicides, fungicides and insecticides; recommends the purchase of herbicides, fungicides and insecticides; organizes, schedules, and reviews subordinate work assignments; organizes and schedules the duties of work crews; operates heavy equipment; supervises the maintenance of vehicles and equipment; gives reports of progress and activities as required; attends specialized training to keep current with pesticide application techniques and regulations; makes recommendations concerning deficiencies or improvements within area of responsibility; operates municipal vehicles; performs related work as required.
Essential Requirements of the Work:
Good knowledge of current principles and practices of landscape design and horticulture; good knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in landscaping and grounds management; good knowledge of basic plant maintenance practices; good knowledge of turf management; some knowledge of computers; ability to plan and supervise the work of semiskilled and unskilled employees and others workers as required; ability to work within budgets; ability to design and supervise landscape construction; ability to produce and interpret specifications for landscape construction and maintenance; ability to purchase restricted use herbicides, fungicides and insecticides; ability to operate a municipal vehicle safely and courteously; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, public officials, other community organizations and the general public.
