Internship Opportunity at Vegas PBS: Data and Business Intelligence Intern

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented intern to help us harness the vast amount of data generated by diverse operations to drive station strategy and efficiency. These key operations include:
 

  • Broadcast Media: Combining local productions and national programming distributed via traditional over-the-air, digital on-demand and streaming services and social media platforms.
  • Marketing/Branding: An internal team utilizes traditional and grass roots marketing strategies to reach the public and grow diverse audiences.
  • Community Engagement: Coordinating a diverse array of events, meet-ups and engagements to grow audiences that do not engage with our traditional media and/or strengthen audience experiences that do. 
  • Workforce Development: Utilizing distance education to provide career and skills training.
  • Early Childhood Education: Offering family engagement outreach and resources.
  • Educational Media Services: Providing professional development, curriculum training, and consultation on PBS LearningMedia materials for local educators.
  • Facility & Production Services: Offering studio and production rental services.
     

Position Summary

The Data and Business Intelligence Intern will be responsible for gathering, warehousing, and synthesizing key performance metrics across all station departments. This role will be pivotal in improving standardized KPIs, creating real-time data reports, and providing analytical support to inform business intelligence initiatives and a rolling strategic plan, ultimately contributing to organizational efficiency and growth.

 

The intern will primarily report to the Director of Strategy and the Director of Content.
 

Key Responsibilities
 

Data Gathering and Reporting

  • Data Aggregation and Warehousing: Systematically gather, collect, and maintain data points from all relevant departments.
  • Daily Metric Creation (Dailies): Develop and pull daily reports to track immediate trends in digital streaming performancesocial media engagement, and over-the-air broadcast metrics.
  • Reporting Support: Assist in collating and formatting gathered data for standardized weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports presented to executive leadership.
  • Dashboard Integration: Assist in preparing data feeds for integration into a real-time station dashboard that updates metrics on a daily basis.
     

Strategic Analysis and Business Intelligence

  • Organizational Efficiency: Work with the Director of Strategy to analyze internal financial and operational data, identifying opportunities for increased efficiency and potential cost savings across the organization.
  • Audience Engagement Research: Research and analyze metrics related to audience development, engagement, trust, and advocacy, applying best practices from the media, gaming, and hospitality sectors.
  • AI Utilization: Utilize proficiency in AI querying and tools to efficiently gather, organize, aggregate, and analyze large, complex datasets, transforming raw information into actionable insights.

 

Required Qualifications & Skills

Technical Proficiency

  • Spreadsheet Mastery: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets for data manipulation, cleaning, and basic visualization.
  • Digital Analytics: Demonstrated proficiency in using Google Analytics to track website and digital media performance.
  • Media Tools: Experience accessing and utilizing media-based databases and specialized tools such as Nielsen and Sprout Social (or similar social media management platforms).
  • AI Proficiency: Documented experience or deep understanding of using AI querying (e.g., using LLMs for data structuring, aggregation, and initial analysis).
  • Data Presentation: Proven ability to create clear, compelling presentations and visualizations (e.g., using PowerPoint, Google Slides, Looker Studio or Tableau) utilizing data to tell a story.

 

Organizational and Foundational Knowledge

  • Industry Context: A solid understanding of the mission and operational models of nonprofit organizations and media industries (especially public broadcasting).
  • Metrics Focus: Keen interest and some knowledge regarding the tracking and analysis of social and digital media metrics.
  • Audience Development: A strong interest or foundational understanding of audience development and engagement strategies—specifically how organizations acquire new audiences, increase engagement, build trust, and foster advocacy (experience from non-media fields like gaming or hospitality is a strong plus).
  • Detail-Oriented: Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy and integrity.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for cross-departmental collaboration and report presentation.

 

Internship Details

Term: Spring/Summer Semester, 10-12 weeks. 

Hours: 10-20 hours per week - flexible hours throughout the week with options to telecommute.
