Position Summary

The Finance Intern will support the NYSBDC Finance team with day-to-day financial operations, reporting, and administrative activities. This internship offers hands-on experience in financial management, accounting processes, budgeting, and compliance, while providing exposure to real-world financial operations in a professional, grant-funded environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide support to NYSBDC Finance Department
  • Assist with post-award financial management for NYSBDC grants and contracts
  • Support the preparation of financial reports, reimbursement requests, and supporting documentation
  • Assist with invoice processing, financial reconciliations, and payment documentation
  • Maintain organized financial and grant records in accordance with audit and compliance standards
  • Support basic programming and form creation using Jotform and grant management software
  • Assist with internal monitoring, audits, and grant closeout activities
  • Participate in special projects and ad hoc financial analysis as assigned
  • Collaborate with finance staff and other departments as needed
  • Perform additional finance and administrative duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a degree program in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Basic understanding of accounting or financial principles
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in grants management, entrepreneurship, or nonprofit administration
  • Familiarity with government or grant-funded programs
  • Experience with financial systems or accounting software (e.g., Oracle, BI)
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks

Work Modality & Reporting Requirements

Hybrid Work Structure

  • This internship follows a hybrid model, combining remote work with required in-person hours.
  • In-person reporting is required in accordance with SUNY System Administration internship guidelines.

On-Site Location

In-person hours may be completed at:

  • A SUNY campus (host institution), or
  • An NYSBDC regional office designated by the supervisor

The exact location will be confirmed during onboarding.

On-Site Expectations

  • Interns must be present during standard operating hours of the assigned campus or NYSBDC office
  • Interns must comply with all campus and NYSBDC policies, including check-in procedures, confidentiality requirements, and visitor protocols.

Workspace & Technology Requirements

Workspace Provided

  • A designated workspace (desk or shared workstation) will be available during on-site hours
  • Workspace access may vary by location; all sites provide a professional and safe work environment

Technology Requirements

  • A laptop is not supplied at all locations
  • Interns are expected to use personal equipment unless a loaner device is explicitly confirmed by the host location
  • Internet access and basic office resources (printing, meeting spaces, etc.) will be available on-site

Cybersecurity & Data Use

  • Interns must complete all required SUNY or NYSBDC IT and cybersecurity training prior to system access
  • Client-identifiable SBA data must not be stored locally on personal devices
