Electrical Engineer

Description of Work

Under the general supervision of the Lead Engineer, performs a variety of professional engineering work associated with power plants, electric substations, electric transmission and distribution networks, SCADA (System Control and Data Acquisition), communication systems, and other City owned facilities.

 

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent engineering degree from an accredited college or university.  If equivalent engineering degree, must have relevant electrical work experience.
  • Must possess a valid State driver’s license.
  • 3-5 years of increasingly responsible experience in the electrical engineering industry preferred.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Nebraska preferred.

 

Essential Functions of the Job

  • Protection and Controls: Develop, implement, and maintain HU’s Protection System Maintenance and Testing Program for transmission and distribution systems. Responsible for planning, designing, and review of new or modified substation or generator protection system implementations. Perform or review protective relay settings calculations and implement the application of relay settings to new or existing facilities. Responsible for planning, designing, and review of new or modified DC control systems for substation and generation facilities. Plan, coordinate, and manage testing of protective relays and DC control systems related to substation and generation facilities.
  • NERC: assist with the development, implementation, and management of NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) Compliance Program. Prepare, coordinate and review the submittal of data to regulatory authorities. Participate in NERC self-certifications and compliance audits. 
  • Power Plant Generation: Assist power plant personnel with design, maintenance, and troubleshooting of power plant electrical and control systems, including protection, excitation, governor, and Distributed Control System.  Electrical system modeling for short circuit and Arc-Flash analysis.   
  • SCADA: assist with management and administration of the SCADA system for the gas, water, sewer and electric networks. 
  • Project Management: Lead various capital projects with contractors, preparing drawings, specifications, bid documents, and construction management.  Assist with the preparation of the one and six year capital improvement budgets.  Design, create, and maintain electrical drawings using AutoCAD.
  • Perform technical operational analysis and makes recommendations concerning motors, transformers, generators, switchgear, substations, metering and control systems, SCADA system, and electric distribution and transmission networks in accordance with applicable codes and regulations including the National Electric Safety Code.
