Editorial Intern — Submission Review
Role Overview
The Alexander Review is seeking Submission Readers to support the journal’s editorial review process. Submission Readers conduct first-round, rubric-based evaluations of literary submissions and provide concise written assessments. This role is foundational to TAR’s mission of careful, fair, and intentional publication.
Submission Readers do not make final acceptance decisions. Their work ensures consistency, depth, and editorial integrity at scale.
Responsibilities
- Read and evaluate literary submissions assigned by the Editorial Lead
- Score each piece using TAR’s standardized editorial rubric
- Provide 3–5 sentences of written feedback addressing craft, concept, and execution
- Submit evaluations within established review timelines
- Maintain confidentiality and impartiality throughout the review process
- Flag exceptional or anomalous submissions for escalation when appropriate
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Strong reading comprehension and attention to literary craft
- Ability to assess writing objectively using defined criteria
- Comfort working within structured guidelines and deadlines
- Clear, concise written communication
- Familiarity with contemporary poetry and/or prose
Preferred (but not required):
- Experience submitting to or working with literary journals
- Prior editorial, workshop, or peer-review experience
- Enrollment in or completion of creative writing or literature coursework
