Description: The mission of the University of California Berkeley Housing and Dining Sustainability (H&DS) team is to use student-led advocacy, auditing, and peer education to make sustainability accessible and appealing to the UC Berkeley community, improve housing & dining infrastructure, and work towards more ethical and environmentally sound practices. 


 

The Food Data Coordinator supports Berkeley Dining’s broader sustainability goals by analyzing dining data, forecasting progress, and helping maintain key reporting systems. This role is essential for campus reporting (AASHE, STARS), sustainable purchasing tracking, and carbon reporting.

 

 

Essential Projects & Duties

  • Sustainability Reporting
    • Assist with annual STARS reporting for sustainable food and plant-forward metrics.
    • Support Berkeley’s reporting toward UC’s 25% sustainable and 50% plant-based targets.

       
  • Data Analysis & Dashboards
    • Maintain and update internal dining dashboards.
    • Support Menu Frequency Analysis and carbon reporting requirements.

       
  • Plant-Forward Operations Support
    • Analyze recipe-level or recipe-frequency data to support culinary planning.

       
  • Carbon Footprint (Scope 3) Work
    • Help categorize and verify products for emissions reporting.
    • Work with procurement data systems and TASTE tool outputs.

       
  • Intern Mentorship
    • Support food systems interns in data-cleaning and analysis tasks.

 

 

Administrative Duties

  • Bi-weekly check-in meetings
  • Maintain organized datasets and shared documents
  • Respond to communications in a timely way

     

 

 

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Strong interest in sustainability, food systems, or data analysis
  • Competence in Excel/Sheets
  • Detail-oriented and comfortable with numbers

     

Preferred:

  • Experience with data visualization tools
  • Background in environmental science, public health, or economics
  • Ability to explain data clearly

PAID POSITION

Hours: Part-time, 8-10 hrs/wk

Pay rate: Asst II, $19.18/hr
