Intern - Engineering (Plant Operations Division)

NATURE OF WORK
 

The City of Sunrise offers internships in the areas of administration, finance, urban planning, emergency management, engineering and special projects throughout the City. This is varied semi-professional work which may include, but not limited to, research, technical/financial assistance, special projects, preparation of written communications, review of technical documents and agreements, citizen engagement, interdepartmental coordination, assistance with project management, involvement in a wide range of municipal management and community development issues, and assisting in administrative/office management.


 

POSITION TYPE
Part time, paid Internship or "for credit" Internship:

 

  • Hours: Up to 26 hours per week
  • Paid internship rate is $15 per hour
  • Length of assignment: Up to 12 months

 

Examples of Duties

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 

  • Regulatory formwork and submittals
  • Permitting assistance activities
  • Engineering plan and field review/observation
  • Reporting and documentation
  • Spreadsheet maintenance and data entry
  • Quote and invoice review
  • Assistance with special engineering projects (CAD, shop drawing review, calculations)
  • Filing of documents
  • Performs duties as assigned

 

Requirements


EDUCATION
 

  • Must be currently enrolled at an accredited Florida college or university in an undergraduate or graduate program in Engineering, Public Administration, Public Relations, Public Safety, Emergency Management or related field; or a recent graduate from an accredited college/university possessing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in the fields of study outlined.  
  • PROOF OF EDUCATION MUST BE SUBMITTED AS AN ATTACHMENT WITH APPLICATION. (Applications without attached proof of education will not be processed for consideration.)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

 

  • Ability to perform research and prepare pertinent reports.
  • Fundamental knowledge of water and wastewater operations is desirable.
  • Experience in use of computers and good communication skills are desirable.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other employees and City officials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively, both verbally and in writing to individuals as well as groups.
  • Ability to withstand pressure of competing priorities and varied responsibilities and works efficiently and effectively to develop win-win solutions.

 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Physical:

Light physical effort in sedentary to light work, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials up to twenty pounds. Descending and climbing stairways and extended periods of standing observation may be required during field activities.

Work Environment:

Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment. Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

Sensory:

The ability to perceive and differentiate visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing.


LEARNING OUTCOMES
 

  • Intern will gain knowledge and experience relating to the operations of a large water utility including but not limited to: compliance and regulatory requirements, dealing with the public, calculations necessary for operating utility plants, sampling and testing requirements, reporting, budgeting, cost estimating, being part of a team, and producing drawings and specifications.
