Position Title: Advertising & Brand Strategy Intern
Reports To: Michael Betker, Senior Lecturer, Communication
Hours: 10–12 per week (flexible around academic commitments)
Term: Fall 2025, with option for renewal
Purpose of Position
These interns serve as the in-house creative agency for the Department of Communication, providing full advertising, branding, and promotional services for departmental initiatives, events, and recruitment campaigns. The role bridges theory and practice, emphasizing how professional advertising applies the creative principles of message design, storytelling, and visual strategy.
Position Philosophy
In Marketing, promotion is the fourth P. In Communication, it’s a capital P—an entire curriculum devoted to how meaning, story, and creative message design actually work. Marketing analyzes behavior; we craft the behavior-shaping narratives. These interns embody that distinction through applied creative strategy in service of the department’s brand and community voice.
Key Responsibilities
• Concept and produce integrated advertising campaigns for Communication programs and events
• Design and manage content across social media, print, and digital channels
• Conduct creative briefings and client-style presentations for department stakeholders
• Develop copy, visuals, and video assets consistent with CoAC branding
• Measure and report campaign performance using basic analytics tools
• Collaborate with faculty, WAA leadership, and university marketing to maintain brand consistency
• Support special projects such as the 50/50 Communication Anniversary and “Creators in Action” campaigns
Skills and Competencies
• Strong writing, visual storytelling, and concepting ability
• Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud and social media management tools
• Understanding of brand voice, message hierarchy, and creative strategy
• Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills
• Self-direction, time management, and collaborative problem-solving
Requirements
• Enrolled UW–Whitewater student, preferably in Communication, Advertising, PR, or related field
• Member (or eligible member) of the Whitewater Advertising Association
• 10–12 hours per week commitment; occasional event coverage may occur outside standard hours
Learning Outcomes
Interns will develop hands-on experience in campaign strategy, creative production, and client relations, culminating in a professional portfolio that demonstrates real-world advertising proficiency.
