*The internship period will be up to two (2) years and requires enrollment in an approved Technical College Medium/Heavy Truck program.
What you would do in this job
The Mechanic Technician Intern will be a multi-year progressive and competitive apprenticeship through classroom instruction, hands-on-training, and job shadowing. You will learn how to:
- Perform troubleshooting, preventive maintenance and repairs of battery-electric buses, cars, trucks, and equipment.
- Diagnose, inspect, repair, replace, rebuild, and adjust electrical, mechanical systems and components.
- Perform bus changes/service calls.
- Welds, fabricates, cuts metal, wood, and other materials to repair vehicles and equipment.
- Cleans work areas, buses and equipment using power sweepers and scrubbers, pressure washers, chemicals, soap, and floor dry.
- Completes miscellaneous shop work (fuels/cleans/sweeps buses, directs traffic, empties trash, fills windshield wash buckets, markups, drives forklift, moves recycling bins, measures fluid tanks using a dip stick, moves buses, drives buses through wash racks, etc.).
- Operates a forklift as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)
High School Diploma or GED (General Education Degree) must be 18 or older and currently enrolled in in an approved Technical College Medium/Heavy Truck program.
License Requirements: A valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Year 1: Wage Class 22: Step 1 (70%)
Year 2: Wage Class 45: Step 2 (80%)
What your work environment would be: work is performed in a maintenance garage setting. This position may require working in wet or hot, humid non-weather conditions and in high precarious places up to two thirds of the time. This position may also require, up to one third of the time, working in outdoor weather conditions, extreme cold, and potential risk of electrical shock and work with explosives.
If you are new to the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test (safety sensitive positions only), and a background check which verifies education, employment, and criminal history. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the job. If you have a criminal conviction, you do not automatically fail. The Metropolitan Council considers felony, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a case-by-case basis, based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.
