Job Summary
We are seeking an aspiring engineer to fill an Engineering Intern position in our Public Works Department. Our ideal applicant is a current student of a civil engineering, construction engineering or construction management program. You will learn the responsibilities of a professional engineer under the supervision of our more senior employees.
Under the supervision and direction of senior engineers, the Engineering Intern performs entry-level professional engineering work and other related work as required. The Engineering Intern is expected to learn and to complete tasks and assignments independently using personal initiative, independent judgment, skill, and appropriate discretion.
Examples of Duties
The Engineering Intern will assist in project development, provide technical support, and gain hands-on experience in engineering practices.
In addition, the Engineering Intern will fulfill administrative duties, as required, and is expected to incorporate academic knowledge into hands-on work.
Some of the duties include:
- Assists in the design of civil engineering projects, including infrastructure, drainage, and transportation projects.
- Assists in the review of encroachment permits within public right of way.
- Participates in field surveys and data collection activities to gather information necessary for project planning and design.
- Makes field inspections of projects during construction to ensure proper quality and quantity of work.
- Prepares and reviews technical documents, reports, and presentations.
- Collaborates with project managers and senior engineers in delivering capital improvements projects to ensure projects are on time and within budget.
- Engages in community and stakeholder meetings to gather input and concerns related to engineering projects.
- Assists with general office duties such as answering phones, photocopying, and assisting the public
Knowledge and Abilities
- Knowledge of construction drawings, and project specifications.
- Knowledge of a variety of computer applications including Google Earth, Outlook, and Microsoft Office 360.
- Knowledge and operation of office equipment (phone, copy machine).
- Knowledge of AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bluebeam, and ArcGIS.
- Ability to solve problems and work independently.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Education and Experience
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Education: Current enrollment in a college or university working towards the equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering, construction engineering, or construction management
Experience: No previous experience is required; however, any prior experience working in a local government organization is highly desirable.
Special Conditions and Licenses
Licenses and Certifications: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver’s License by the time of appointment.

About the City
Nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, just north of the cities of Pasadena and Glendale, the City of La Cañada Flintridge is a low-density residential community which enjoys a rural character and a small-town atmosphere while maintaining a close proximity to the downtown Los Angeles urban center. Commercial development in the City is almost exclusively limited to the frontage along Foothill Boulevard, the main surface thoroughfare.
The City has a population of approximately 21,800 within its 8.6 square miles. The City was incorporated as a general-law city on December 8, 1976, with a Council/Manager form of government. Some city services are provided under contract with the County of Los Angeles or other private entities. In-house staff provides general administration, public works, and planning services to the community.
