​Communications Writing Assistant​

​​The College of Arts and Sciences Communications Team is charged with identifying, creating, and sharing the stories of all those who participate in the liberal arts experience at UO. This position specifically focuses on writing stories about news, students, faculty, alumni and staff in the Schnitzer School of Global Studies and Languages

The team utilizes and manages a comprehensive suite of communications tools, including content creation, public relations, assistance in branding and advertising, digital media, and more for the benefit of the Schnitzer School.

  • ​Learn how to effectively manage projects and client relationships with various stakeholder perspectives 
  • ​Develop skills in clearly and effectively exchanging information, ideas, facts and perspectives inside and outside of the university 
  • ​Demonstrate awareness, attitude, knowledge and skills required to equitably engage and include people from different local and global culture  
  • ​Gain experience working in a professional environment 
  • ​Understand how the university functions as an organization 
  • ​Build/grow a professional network 
  • ​Develop strong writing and other work samples 
  • ​Develop a strong resume and portfolio to use in post-college job searches

Minimum Qualifications

  • ​​Currently enrolled student 
  • ​Good communication skills (interpersonal skills, doesn’t necessarily need to reflect in grades) 
  • ​Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • ​Proficient with word processors, such as MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel 
  • ​Proactive, self-motivated and deadline-oriented, with strong attention to detail 
  • ​Comfortable receiving and giving feedback 
  • ​Bold, willing to give their opinion and perspective 
  • ​Willingness to learn​ 

Preferred Qualifications

  • ​​Experience with photography and videography 
  • ​Proficient with design, layout and graphics software applications 
  • ​Excellent organizational and customer service skills​ 

Duties

Major

  • ​Interviewing sources for news stories and profiles in the Schnitzer School of Global Studies and Languages 
  • ​Writing journalistic and professional articles for the Schnitzer School of Global Studies and Languages, 
  • ​Feature writing for long-form stories in the CAS Connection digital publication 
  • ​Edit and proofread materials according to AP and Chicago style books 
  • ​Occasional photography and/or videography as needed for stories 
  • ​Create a transferrable set of skills and work samples for post-college job applications 

Minor

  • ​General office duties 
  • ​Assist with file organization and database management 
  • ​Assist with other project/document tracking systems/print orders 
  • ​Other duties as assigned​

​​Student should be available for meetings on campus during regular business hours, with consideration of their class schedule. They also must make themselves available during regular business hours to conduct interviews. Writing can be done in windows of time that best suit the student. ​ 

​​Workers can work remotely but are expected to attend meetings on campus.​
