Veterans Claims Officer 1

The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) currently has multiple openings for Veterans Claims Officers to serve as team members in the department’s Claims Assistance Office. These positions will be headquartered in King and Milwaukee, WI respectively.

The position in King, WI is located at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King (WVHK). The historic WVHK is conveniently located in Central Wisconsin near the City of Waupaca and is easily accessible off Highway 10 between Stevens Point and Appleton. The location spans 42 acres of scenic landscape and is nestled between tranquil spring-fed lakes and lush green rolling hills. 

The position in Milwaukee, WI is located at the department’s Regional Office on West National Avenue near the Zablocki Medical Center and American Family Field. This position will periodically travel to the Wisconsin Veterans Home at Union Grove (WVHUG). WVHUG is located off Highway 11 in-between Burlington and Racine and is a short drive from Milwaukee, Racine, Kenosha, and other key locations throughout Southeastern Wisconsin.

Position Summary

These positions represent veterans and/or their dependents in presenting claims before the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (USDVA). The incumbents provide advocacy, counseling, referral, and follow-up service to those veterans and/or dependents needing assistance; make sound decisions on behalf of veterans and/or dependents as their Power of Attorney representative; and apply acquired skills and knowledge in obtaining claims awards and relief to state taxpayers. These positions specialize in working with veterans in long-term care populations.

Salary Information

The starting salary is between $26.50 and $29.36 an hour ($55,120 and $61,068 annually). Current state employees pay will be based on the provisions in the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan. This classification is in Pay Schedule 12, Pay Range 64.

 

Job Details

Due to the nature of these position’s duties, WDVA will conduct criminal background checks prior to an offer of hire. Candidates for employment in this position must also pass a federal background check.

These positions are eligible to work remotely up to two days per week. Remote work is intended to be performed primarily in the State of Wisconsin. High speed internet access is a requirement of remote work. Remote work options are subject to change based on business needs. An initial in-office training period will be required, and remote work is only available after the issuance of a PIV card (up to 3 months after hire).

Employment in these positions is contingent upon passing a pre-employment tuberculosis (TB) skin test.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship) at the time of application. WDVA does not sponsor work or student visas, either at time of hire or at any later time.

A twelve-month probationary period will be required.

 

Qualifications

Minimally qualified candidates will have experience with case management including:

  • Assisting claimants with applications for benefits (e.g., educational, healthcare, housing, etc.); and
  • Gathering or requesting evidence to respond to claimant inquiries; and
  • Identifying errors, inconsistencies, or omissions in requests; and
  • Explaining benefits decisions to claimants.

Well qualified candidates will also have experience:

  • Working through an appeal (e.g., filing an appeal, explaining appeal rights to clients, acting as a representative throughout the process, etc.); or
  • Assisting claimants with applications for federal or state benefits related to an employment or disability benefit program; or
  • Working with federal laws pertaining to compensation and pension or federal Veterans Affairs regulations and procedures to process veteran benefit claims.
