Housekeeping Management Trainee - InterContinental New York Barclay

Join the iconic InterContinental New York Barclay as a Housekeeping Manager Trainee (Intern) and become part of a team dedicated to luxury, guest satisfaction, and operational excellence. This internship is designed for individuals passionate about hospitality, eager to learn the fundamentals of housekeeping management, and ready to collaborate with multiple hotel departments-including Sales-to deliver an exceptional guest experience, especially for VIP clients. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Departmental Operations

  • Assist in managing day-to-day housekeeping operations to ensure the highest standards of cleanliness and presentation in guest rooms and public areas. 
  • Become an expert and use the hotel’s property management system – OPERA.
  • Understand and apply the hotel’s CBA and side agreement with the local union and support the implementation and enforcement of departmental policies and procedures.

Quality Assurance 

  • Conduct routine inspections of guest rooms and public spaces to ensure cleanliness and adherence to brand standards. 
  • Document and report maintenance issues or damages identified during inspections. Use the hotel’s HotSOS maintenance system to assign and track work orders for engineering.   
  • Complete tracking on various GC programs – windows, carpet, room general cleans. Update monthly tracking results and assign lagging rooms/projects as needed. 
  • Assist in coaching and training housekeeping staff in the best practices and areas for improvement. 

 

Interdepartmental Collaboration 

  • Work closely with the Sales Department to prepare and inspect rooms for VIP clients, ensuring all special requirements and amenities are met. 
  • Coordinate with Sales to understand occupancy forecasts, special events, and promotional activities that impact housekeeping operations. 
  • Collaborate with other hotel departments (Front Office, Maintenance, Food & Beverage) to deliver seamless guest service. 

Guest Experience 

  • Respond to Guest Love watchlist, guest requests, and feedback, ensuring prompt resolution and guest satisfaction. 
  • Support the lost and found process in coordination with other departments as needed. 

Administrative Support 

  • Participate in meetings (e.g. Group resumes) and training sessions to develop management, leadership, and communication skills. 
  • Become knowledgeable with the current cba and union side agreements and work / operate / lead, within those guidelines 

Special Focus: Sales Department Collaboration 

  • Partner with Sales to inspect and prepare rooms for VIP guests, ensuring every detail meets or exceeds client expectations.   
  • Support the placement of promotional items and amenities for VIP and group bookings as directed by Sales. 
  • Attend pre-event briefings with Sales to align on guest requirements, room setups, and service delivery for key accounts and events. 
  • Work with the sales coordinator and front desk mod to secure and prepare daily show rooms.    
  • Lead the winter “chalet/holiday” deployment.

Requirements 

  • Enrolled in a Hospitality, Hotel Management, or related program (Bachelor’s degree preferred). 
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and a passion for delivering outstanding guest service. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; fluency in English required, additional languages a plus. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural, fast-paced environment. 
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays as needed. 
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 25 pounds as part of daily duties.
