January ISP
Internship Goals
The January Introductory Internship is for students who are keenly interested in a career in animal care, but may not have much experience in the field yet. The goal of the January Introductory Internship is to provide these students with a brief introduction to the inner workings of wildlife rehabilitation, zoological facilities maintenance, and wildlife medicine.
Intern Responsibilities
Responsibilities of interns working in hospital include but are not limited to:
- Attending rounds at 8am sharp
- Cleaning cages
- Cleaning floors
- Cleaning perches
- Hosing down towels
- Cleaning carriers
- Laundry
- Attending all scheduled lectures
Responsibilities of interns working on grounds include but are not limited to:
- Attending rounds at 8am sharp
- Raking enclosures
- Scooping feces and debris out of the enclosure
- Scrubbing and filling ponds
- Scrubbing perches
- Helping take out trash and recycling
Weekly Schedule
Introductory Interns will alternate between hospital shifts with the Wildlife Rehabilitation team, and grounds shifts with the Avian Keeper team. There will also be time set aside regularly for learning opportunities. A finalized schedule will be sent out to all interns before the start of the internship.
End-of-Internship Presentation
On the last day of the student’s internship, the student will give a brief Powerpoint presentation to the SOS staff about what they learned during the internship.
