Transit Operator
Join Our Team as a Transit Operator!
The City of Oshkosh is on the lookout for enthusiastic Transit Operator to be the face of our public transportation system. This role isn’t just about driving; it’s about providing safe, efficient, and courteous service to our community. This position may be filled as a Transit Operator, Transit Operator/Laborer, or Transit Operator/Sign Shop position.
What You'll Do
- Drive Public Buses: Navigate established routes, keeping to a set schedule.\
- Ensure Passenger Safety: Assist passengers in boarding, traveling, and alighting at scheduled stops with professionalism and courtesy.
On days they are not assigned to a bus route, the Transit Operator/Laborer will perform additional tasks as follows:
- Shop Labor: Perform routine preventive maintenance on diesel transit buses, service vehicles, facilities, and support equipment. Perform minor repairs as needed or reported. Fuel buses, check fluid levels, and top off. Clean exterior and interior of buses, inspect for defects. Park buses in assigned locations. Perform road service calls/repairs.
- Grounds: Maintain grounds, building, transit center, bus benches and shelters. Assist in snow removal, and mount/dismount plows on trucks.
On days they are not assigned to a bus route, the Transit Operator/Sign will perform additional tasks as follows:
- Traffic Painting: Paint or tape crosswalks, centerlines, lane lines, directional arrows and parking lot and stalls. Perform proper paint mixing, cleaning and repair of paint and tape equipment. Remove obsolete pavement markings.
- Traffic Signs: Assemble and install all types of signs on such objects as posts, buildings, and overhead sign structures. Install and maintain signposts.
- Record Keeping: Assist in other Transportation Department activities such as compiling traffic engineering data, counting vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and recording traffic patterns. Reporting all safety hazards and accidents.
What We're Looking For
- A high school diploma or GED.
- A valid CDL, Class B with passenger endorsement, and no air brake restriction.
- A pristine driving record.
- Bonus Qualifications: Experience driving buses or large trucks for at least one year.
- Flexibility: Buses run Monday - Saturday from 6 a.m. - 6:45 p.m. so be ready to work early mornings, late nights, some holidays, along with potential overtime.
