Communications Intern

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Communications Intern will serve in this project-based role that also provides administrative support to the Communications Department. The intern will have the opportunity to gain invaluable hands-on experience in a variety of communication department initiatives, including strategic planning, creative content development, public relations, digital marketing campaigns, analytics, and more, all within a nonprofit contemporary art museum environment. The Communications Intern will be a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual who is driven both independently and collaboratively, possesses excellent communication skills, and has superior time management skills. The intern will support the following objectives: public relations, database management, community relations, partnerships, archives, and media library management. 

This is a hybrid role. Work will be performed in an office environment at the museum as well as working remotely from home. Communications department staff are required to be on site at the museum on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for collaboration across departments as well as on select evenings for designated special events. If all staff should be required to return to the building full-time, so will this position. Proper equipment and supplies needed to meet the requirements of the job will be provided. This role requires working at a desk and utilizing computers and phones for prolonged periods of time. For special events, candidate must be able to stand for several hours at a time. The position may require occasional heavy lifting of 20 lbs. or less. 

This position reports directly to—and is mentored by—the Director of Communications. This role also provides support to the Associate Creative Director and the Social Media Manager. 

This opportunity is offered as part of a paid internship program supported by the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD).

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organize, manage, and accurately submit print and online calendar and event listings for the museum’s exhibitions, public programs, and educational initiatives
  • Update, develop, and maintain the database of calendar information media outlets 
  • Conduct meta-tagging in the museum’s extensive media library of images and videos on Dropbox
  • Organize the communications department’s archive of physical assets and press clippings
  • Develop and manage the museum’s hotel partnership program, maintaining a database of partners and incentives, while building relationships with hospitality partners throughout Miami Beach
  • Work alongside staff during Miami Art Week special events, supporting press and event planning initiatives
  • Conduct administrative tasks as requested by internal department colleagues
  • Undergo a required performance review at the conclusion of the internship
  • Submit a required 1-2 page written report summarizing the activities and results of the internship, to be submitted on the final date of the internship
  • Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS AND DESIRED SKILLS

  • Sophomore, junior, or senior undergraduate at an accredited college/university seeking bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, nonprofit management, museum management, art history, advertising, media management or a related field
  • Strong verbal communication skills, excellent presentation skills, strong project management skills and organization skills, and precise attention to detail are a must
  • Ability to work in a complex, fast-paced, deadline driven, creative, and collaborative nonprofit institution
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, with emphasis on Excel and MS Word. Knowledge of Dropbox is desired
  • Knowledge of meta-tagging best practices are desired

DATE OF HIRE/INTERNSHIP TERM & SCHEDULE

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis, and the position may be filled prior to the closing of applications. Intern must be able to start immediately. This is a paid internship position with a total 420-hour commitment beginning September 2025, to be fulfilled by December 2025. The schedule consists of approximately 20-30 hours per week for 12-14 weeks (about 4 months). Intern must have flexibility to work on occasional weekday evenings for special events taking place approximately once a month. Intern must be able to work during Miami Art Week for special events, including the opening night reception taking place at the museum on the evening of December 3, 2025. Final internship dates are flexible to accommodate academic schedules.
