Part-Time Production Artist

Position Summary: Perfect opportunity for a Graphic Design Artist who wants to learn the newspaper industry at Pacific Publishing Company in South Seattle (SoDo). 

As part of the team, this position is responsible for design and layout of Advertisements and Editorial in our neighborhood newspapers. This work must be done in a timely manner that meets the needs of our advertising clients and internal press schedules. The ability to take full responsibility of all of our publications weekly by building ads, flowing in classifieds/legals/editorial and prepress preparation. Another function of the role is the production of special projects on deadline while maintaining other job duties. The Part-Time Production Artist works closely with the sales staff to create, modify, and update advertisements in time to meet weekly/monthly advertising deadlines. This position also works to compile editorials from freelance writers and news-wire sites.

Wage: $ 25 hourly, DOE

Days and Hours:  20 to 25 hours a week
Monday – Friday - 5 hours, daily schedule has room for flexibility to be agreed upon during hiring process. Estimated range to be within 10 AM to 7 PM.
This schedule can be revisited depending on deadlines and workloads.

This position is also intended to be a relief position for both our Sales/Marketing Manager and Prepress Technician. Those hours would be above and beyond the scheduled 20-25 weekly when they occur.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of prior experience in graphic design or production layout schooling, 
    or work experience
  • Proficiency with Adobe Suite CC, including InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
  • Knowledge of file preparation for CMYK output for newsprint is helpful

Additional Desired Qualifications and Skills

  • Prior experience with print publication(s)
  • Experience with magazine or newspaper layout design
  • Experience with advertising design
  • Experience making high resolution PDF files
  • Familiarity with CMS and online ad development, helpful

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Ability to learn, industry specific software, including FTP and Enfocus PitStop Pro (PDF) software
  • Must be able to communicate with editorial, sales, and management to ensure the highest quality designs are produced
  • Must be familiar with working within corporate identity guidelines
  • Familiarity with Microsoft suite
  • Visual acuity
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Excellent communication, attention to detail and presentation skills
  • Ability to perform assigned job responsibilities in a timely manner and with minimal supervision
  • Flexibility in performing tasks outside of basic responsibilities
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Upload editorial stories for publications as requested by editors 
  • Layout newspaper editorial, classifieds/legals, and retail ads using Adobe InDesign while following design guidelines
  • Multi-task - questions, phone calls, and projects in a timely manner
  • Collaborate with Account Executives and Editors to produce effective advertisements and pages that meet the needs of our clients.
  • Present necessary ad proofs to sales team on time, ensuring that client has adequate time for review and approval
  • Produce quality work in a fast-paced environment, meeting deadlines
  • Assist in other duties as instructed or required
  • Must be punctual and maintain an acceptable attendance record
  • Must adhere to company policies and procedures

Work Environment

  • Most hours spent sitting at a computer, occasionally getting up to load and punch plates. Concrete/tile floors and variable temperatures.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to spend most time viewing a computer screen.  Must have high visual acuity with excellent color perception with or without corrective lenses.

Work Schedule

  • Typically, 20-25 hours per week. Due to the nature of this position, hours will vary in order to accomplish the required tasks and may require coming in early, staying late, or working weekends. It is critical that the person in this position be reliable/have reliable transportation.
