Municipal Engineer

Municipal engineer providing design leadership on municipal infrastructure and land development projects as part of an infrastructure or capital improvement project team; ensuring that projects and developments comply with local, state, and federal regulations including grants, and assisting in the management of the city's infrastructure budget.

  • Design: Create plans for public infrastructure like streets, parks, water systems, and storm sewers. 
  • Review: Ensure that designs meet local standards and follow Georgia Department of Transportation standards as required.
  • Support construction: Provide construction support services like contract administration, permitting, soil and erosion compliance, and budget management. 
  • Write reports: Prepare technical reports like feasibility studies, engineering assessments, and design reports.
  • Collaborate: Work with stakeholders to improve the city and act as a liaison between the city, citizens, and other agencies.
  • Budget: Assist other departments in the management of the city's infrastructure budget and applications for funding.
  • Perform a technical role on a wide variety of engineering assignments under the mentorship of senior practitioners, utility owners, and executive leadership.
  • Work closely with project managers and project team to help deliver project deliverables.
  • Liaise with other discipline leads, project managers, vendors and community to facilitate smooth flow of information for use in preparing preliminary and detailed design.
  • Communicate and work with other project team members in Thomasville, the Georgia Department of Transportation, and other Georgia departments as needed per project in order to provide quality service to the community on projects of varying scope and complexity.
  • Preparation of contract language and special provisions suitable for bidding.
  • Preparation of environmental and land use permit applications and pursue approvals.
  • Ensuring schedules, budgets, and quality control standards are achieved and maintained.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field from a four (4) year ABET/EAC accredited university.
  • Experience in public works, engineering, or a related field.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

 

  • Proficiency with engineering software like AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS and Microsoft Office. 
  • Ability to interpret electronic information, contour drawings, and aerial mapping.
  • Strong critical thinking skills and ability to apply design standards. 
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time under pressure. 
  • Ability to communicate ideas effectively in writing and orally. 
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Ability to work well in a dynamic team environment and build effective working relationships with the public and other agencies.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and an ability.
  • Preferred:  Current Georgia Professional Engineering license or ability to get it; Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam and registered as an Engineer Intern; negotiable.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.[
