Project Summary

The intern will assist in the management of archaeological resources stewarded at the Minnesota Historical Society and the Department of Natural Resources. For Summer 2025, the focus will be on Split Rock Lighthouse, Jeffers Petroglyphs, Lake Bronson State Park, DNR Forestry and Fish & Wildlife lands. 

Ideal Degrees

Anthropology/Archaeology, American Indian Studies, Geology, Geography, Environmental Studies, Cultural Resources or Heritage Management, Public History, or related degrees.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct background research on known archaeological sites in Minnesota
  • Complete desktop reviews and conditions assessment of select archaeological features and sites, using previous archaeological data, review of historical maps, aerial/historical imagery and more
  • Participate in site visits and investigations at archaeological sites in Minnesota.
  • Understand and maintain organizational structure of archaeological data
  • Digitize relevant associated documentation (e.g., site reports, field notes)
  • Conduct research for narrative/content development for public dissemination.
  • Assist with the production of archaeological reports and associated documentation.

Qualifications

  • Completed a field school or field program in anthropology/archaeology, geology or associated discipline
  • Complete coursework in cultural resources management and associated topics
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team setting
  • Detail-orientated
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite & Google Suite
  • Desired, but not required: Experience with ESRI’s ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.

Knowledge Intern is Expected to Gain

  • Gain an understanding of the principles and practice of archaeological resource management, including engagement/partnerships with communities in monitoring heritage resources and the tools (with focus on non-invasive methods) archaeologists use.
  • Gain practical experience with Federal and state regulations, including Section 106 of the National Historic Reservation Act, Minnesota Statutes Chapter 138, Minnesota Private Cemeteries Act (MS 307.08), Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, and the Archaeological Resources Protection Act.
  • Network with professional colleagues at the federal and state level in Minnesota.
  • Experience in the use of skillsets such as photogrammetry and software such as ESRI ArcGIS.
  • Contribute to drafting a National Historic Landmark nomination and the engagement of communities and the public.
