Project Summary

The intern assists with conducting basic background research on known archaeological sites and inventorying, digitizing, rehousing of archaeological artifacts in MNHS collections. They will also assist with records transcriptions and artifact photography, as well as updating records in the Collections Management System (CMS). 

Ideal Degrees

Anthropology/Archaeology, American Indian Studies, Museum Studies, Public History, or related degrees.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct background research on known archaeological sites in Minnesota
  • Use original documentation to identify artifacts
  • Assist in artifact analysis
  • Create bag tags and rehouse artifacts for curation
  • Understand and maintain organizational structure of collections
  • Complete records transcriptions and artifact photography
  • Digitize relevant associated documentation (e.g., site reports, field notes)
  • Update records in the Collections Management System (CMS)
  • Conduct research for narrative/content development

Qualifications

  • Coursework in archaeology
  • Completed a field school in anthropology/archaeology
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team setting
  • Detail-orientated
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite & Google Suite

Knowledge Intern is Expected to Gain

  • Build an understanding of the principles and practice of archaeological collections management
  • Experience in cataloging, inventorying, and researching artifact collections and identifying specific artifact types in collections
  • Develop skill sets in artifact photography/photogrammetry, 3D scanning, and software experience
