Communications Specialist
The communications specialist is tasked with enhancing how we tell the story of Lee County Solid Waste through creative communications, marketing and digital media campaigns. The ideal candidate can relay the department’s story through multiple channels to increase public interest and engagement with the organization.
This position will develop proactive, creative, multifaceted marketing and communications campaigns that foster trust and transparency between Lee County Solid Waste and its residents and visitors.
The ideal candidate will be creative yet detail-oriented and able to work independently or as part of a team.
Lee County Government departments are branded as one organization; therefore, the communications specialist is a part of the Office of Community Engagement. This position will work alongside Community Engagement staff while serving as a member of the Solid Waste team. The Communications specialist will report to the Director of Community Engagement.
Solid Waste is among Lee County Government’s largest and most public-facing departments. It focuses on educating people about responsible solid waste practices and planning for future growth in the county, both operationally and through large capital projects.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Draft social media content for use across multiple channels, i.e., reels and post graphics and copy.
- Coordinate branding for public-facing materials (flyers, presentations, education materials, etc.).
- Plan special events, as needed.
- Assist the communications team with media relations.
- Draft department-related press releases, media replies and media pitches.
- Negotiate and place media buys that support marketing strategy and department goals.
- Plan and track the department’s marketing budget under the direction of the department director and the Community Engagement Director.
- Develop and maintain department website content according to the county’s guidelines.
- Represent the department at public outreach events.
- Produce photo and video content for marketing and communication materials.
- Oversee fulfillment of marketing contracts, including creation of assets (examples: JetBlue, Mighty Mussels, airport, DMV, LeeTran, Lamar, etc.)
- Develop educational campaigns and accompanying materials to support departmental and board goals.
- Proactively develop communications tools to help with rumor control.
- Evaluate the success of campaigns and make recommendations for future enhancements.
- Translate department technical-speak into ideas and concepts easily digestible by the general public.
- Promote the department’s Recycle Coach application.
- Work on special projects as needed.
- Be available during emergency response situations; serve as the department’s primary communications liaison in the Emergency Operations Center during emergency response situations.
- Perform related work as assigned.
Education, Experience, Licensing
- Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in communications, journalism, marketing, advertising, business or closely related field and one year social media, marketing, communications or closely related experience.
- Or a minimum of 5 years of experience in social media, marketing, communications, or related field.
- Proven experience in public relations writing and media relations.
- Proven experience in media buying preferred.
- Proficiency in event planning.
- Well organized and detail oriented.
- Willingness to work during an emergency response situation (i.e., hurricanes, tropical storms, pandemics, etc.).
- Possession of a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required.

- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Crisis communication experience preferred.
- Portfolio featuring samples of work is a plus.
