Newcomer Youth Summer Academy Upper School Drumming Intern
At Arts Ignite, we develop agency in youth through the arts. This includes performing arts, creative writing, and visual arts. We encourage young people to discover the joy and power of making art to share their voices, tell their stories, and transform their lives.
The Arts Ignite Drumming Intern at the 2025 Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) will be a support for the Drumming 6-12th Grade classes this summer.
Partnering with the International Rescue Committee (IRC), NYSA is a 6-week summer academy that welcomes youth who have recently resettled in the US into their new lives in NYC. An Arts Ignite classroom at NYSA focuses on school readiness, English language skill building, and Social Emotional Learning skills in an effort to best prepare students to enter the New York City public school system in the fall.
NYSA Drumming Intern Core Responsibilities Include Assisting the Program Manager to:
● Assisting with age-appropriate and culturally relevant lessons that focus on English Language skill building, school readiness, and the development of soft skills.
● Alongside the Lead Teaching Artist, assist in planning a Drumming performance, to be shared at graduation on August 15th.
● Assist collaboration and communication with IRC and Arts Ignite staff members for a cohesive program experience.
● Support and implementation of academy-wide behavior management techniques in the classroom.
● Support and implementation of both Arts Ignite and IRC methodology and pedagogical techniques in the classroom.
● Implementation of Arts Ignite and IRC evaluation tools in the classroom.
● Full participation in Arts Ignite and IRC training sessions.
● Full participation in Arts Ignite post-program surveys.
Job Requirements and Responsibilities:
Arts Ignite Interns at NYSA should be passionate about arts education, teaching English Language Learners, teaching in a school environment, and teaching art in culturally diverse classrooms. This position requires complete commitment and interns must be available for all training and academy days.
Training Dates:
June 30th, 12pm-2pm ET, Arts Ignite training day (Virtual)
July 1st-3rd, 9am-5pm ET, Arts Ignite Interns will join the Teaching Artists for academy training with
the full NYSA staff in-person, at Avenues World School in Chelsea, 259 10th Ave, New York, NY 10001.
July 7-August 15th ET, US Drumming Intern will assist instruction Mondays from 12:15-3pm and Wednesdays from 1:30-3pm ET and attend Planning Meetings from 3-4pm ET.
Virtual Training Day
